In-the-works.

Speculation in the second film even happening was justified given how they'd talked about making it at least sin 1998 (FSM had even reported back then Elfman scoring it), but given we finally got the sequel, I think it's reasonable to assume this film will happen.

WB CEO's Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy confirmed it in the last few days.

EDIT:
I'm sure given the second film's name, this one will likely be the name three times, but there is not enough characters in the Subject line to name it and the eventual composer.

This seemed inevitable given how the second film made a fortune (over $450 million worldwide). Tim Burton said in an interview last year that he felt done with Beetlejuice after the second one, but if Warner makes him some kind of a spectacular dream offer (which I'm guessing they have/will) he could come back. Or he'll produce a third one and another director will tackle it.

I read at another website that he (Tim) had said the second film revitalized him, brought him back, that he felt the soulless machine of Disney had crushed him (something along those lines), so I guess it's possible they could wave some cash in front of him -- and maybe not that much cash.

Until I hear some kind of word of how is doing it, I'll save speculation on the composer for later. If he does it though, I think it'll be a "theme by" Elfman and score by Crispy Bacon situation, but if not, no telling where the composer choice will go.

(apparently Dumbo so crushed him, he thought about retiring after that)

Burton has been loyal to Elfman post-allegations. Elfman was with Burton at a career retrospective in Burbank and Burton came to one of the Elfman/Burton shows later that year. Elfman obviously scored Beetlejuice Beetlejuice after that. If it's up to him, Elfman will be involved - it just depends if any higher-ups take issue with it (Elfman was signed on to B2 before the allegations came out).

Incidentally, AirMail did a big write-up of the Elfman saga. Unlike the initial RollingStone article, it's littered with texts, emails and evidence with people affiliated with what happened. It's a doozy. If you, like me, assumed Elfman was at least somewhat guilty, this may cause you to reconsider. I considered making a post about it because I think it'd be of interest to a lot of people, but the last threads about this topic were all deleted.
