Joe Hisaishi Scoring Kogonada’s ‘A Big Bold Beautiful Journey’

Joe Hisaishi (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, The Boy and the Heron, Howl’s Moving Castle, My Neighbor Totoro, Departures) is making his American feature scoring debut on the upcoming romantic fantasy drama A Big Bold Beautiful Journey. The film is directed by Kogonada (After Yang, Columbus) and stars Margot Robbie, Colin Farrell, Kevin Kline and Phoebe Waller-Bridge. The movie follows two single strangers who meet at a mutual friend’s wedding and soon find themselves on fantastical adventure together where they get to re-live important moments from their respective pasts. Seth Reiss (The Menu) wrote the screenplay and is also producing the project with Bradley Thomas (Killers of the Flower Moon, here’s Something About Mary), Ryan Friedkin (Black Bird, The Last Vermeer) and Youree Henley (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, The Lighthouse). A Big Bold Beautiful Journey will be released in theaters nationwide on September 19 by Sony Pictures.

Hisaishi re-scored Laputa: Castle in the Sky for Disney. Wouldn't that count as his American feature scoring debut?
Semantics I know! Love his music, hope this is interesting.

If he got the budget for a big score and not for a couple of chords for piano and string quartet, we will get the score of the year.

Really excited to hear what will come of this. Hisaishi is great with just a piano and great with a full symphony at his disposal. I'm happy to hear great music no matter how many instruments are involved.

80s Hisaishi with just a CMI Fairlight and Synclavier was godtier (wish we'd get the complete film versions of Nausicaa and Laputa speaking of which)

Totally agree! Both OSTS are quite fragmented.

Amen to that compliment of Hisaishi's inimitable talent!

The Miyazaki/Ghibli soundtrack release concept can be infuriating to so many of us.

I hope it will be good but since I don't like his recent output (The Boy and the Heron, Silent Love, Ni No Kuni, Children of the Sea) I'm not sure what to expect. (The same goes to another Japanese composer, Taro Iwashiro: one of my favorite composers but his latest 3-4 scores did nothing for me.)

But I really like the trailer and it seems the kind of movie that begs for a nice, melodic score.

Really looking forward to this one. Hope it is fully orchestral.

Trailer didn't make me excited but this news does. So, I'm back on board!
