Not a personal favorite, but certainly interesting…

I'm always dubious of a professional's genuine expertise on THE WIZARD OF OZ when they refer to Dorothy's song as
"Somewhere Over the Rainbow".

7.1.4 sound for an orchestra... Love those flutes in the ceiling, amirite?

Considering David Newman and Shawn Murphy's involvement, I would be fairly optimistic.

I saw Newman conduct a live-to-film performance of 'Born In A Trunk' (From Garland's 'A Star Is Born') at the Hollywood Bowl. It was pretty magnificent. Makes me more interested in checking out TWOO.

I’ve been dreaming of a new re-recording of this score for decades. I only hope it’s released. Since they spent some major money on this really-recording I’m hopeful they will release it to recoup some costs.

I feel the same way.

Yes, I would buy that in a heartbeat.

I mean, I would love a new release, but (and I'm sure this will anger many here) it'd be a no go buy for me with the old mono singing on top of it.

Well put.

The film has been cut down to 75 minutes for this presentation, which may affect the music.

Really?! Well, that would be a an instant deal-breaker for me, and so much for "preserving the integrity..." This article doesn't mention cutting anything; where can we read about it?

Yeah, I have to agree that cutting the movie by 24 minutes is a deal breaker. The movie is iconic... you can't just cut out a quarter of it. I have to admit that I am really interested and curious about formatting it for the Sphere, but you just can't cut a well-known piece of cinema history.

That’s a huge chunk of movie! Hard to imagine how the story could even work with that much removed (and presumably keeping most or all of the songs intact)

I’m curious when the copyright on Wizard expires? When they released it in 3D in theaters did that extended the copyright? Normally I would reject cutting so many minutes out of the movie but if they are re-imagining it as a kind of new work of art I’d give it a try. I love the outtake on Rhino release where Judy Garland coughs during one of the takes of Over the Rainbow.

I should cite my source. The FAQ on the Ticketmaster page has the info.

The Wizard of Oz at Sphere Tickets | Event Dates & Schedule | Ticketmaster https://share.google/TAlOaiIuJtRZxDWuu

"How long is the film experience?"

"The film experience’s run time is approximately 75 minutes."

There's a short article on it here, too.

'The Wizard of Oz' to screen at Sphere with shortened runtime https://share.google/yCnMGKyrb1meQw0OK

If you watch some of the YouTube videos of the creation of Oz for the Sphere, you can see they are taking a great deal of liberty with the original movie. Many shots and scenes have been recomposed and extended with generative AI to fill in missing details for this unusual canvas. Completely new material has also been fabricated. For example, there is now a larger, more intimidating view of the wizard when he first appears.

This will be a lavishly expensive souvenir of the movie, and not for purists.

In these times it is of course important to capture every single viewer for classics movies, but this thing takes too much liberties. They are even being dishonest: neither were the original tracks recorded on wax (as the opening of the featurette suggests), nor has it been recorded in monaural. There ARE stereo tracks of the original recording, but Warner didn't see the necessity to release them. Don't want to argue against the fact that a 2024/5 recording will obviously (at least technically) sound better than the original, but let's get the facts right at least.

Seems like that. It's also the Las Vegas way. Musicals that play on the Strip are cut down. The goal, of course, is to get people to Vegas but then to minimize any time that is not spent gambling.
