I was wondering if anyone here who owns the Sony Ultimate Edition of Star Wars Episode 1 has found any problems with their discs.

Both cd's in the set I have seem to have degraded quite badly (as a result the discs skip to a great extent) and are essentially unplayable. I stored my set in exactly the same way as all my other discs, and they are fine, so it is specific to this set. Anyone else had similar problems?

No problems. Then again, I play the original release more often, as it is a far better listening experience.

Yep... tried to play mine the other day and realised there was something wrong !
When I looked at the actual disc surfaces they looked like they are frosted... the player wouldn't even read them !
Looked on the net to see if I could find any info but couldn't... until now !

I'm in England by the way... where did you buy yours ?

Yes! It presents the music as edited for the film, instead of the original cues as Williams recorded them!

"Ultimate Edition" MY ASS!!!

(Okay, okay. I know that's not what you meant. Seems as if Sony's "frosted discs" might be one more kick in the pants for the true JW/SW-music fan. I'd better go listen to my own set now, and see if it still works . . .)

Andyzone,

I'm in Scotland - got mine from Amazon.co.uk a good while back. My discs have that "frosted look" too. I won't say that i'm glad to hear it's not just me though frown

I wonder if Sony Classical are aware of their faulty product?

Is it the first of April already? Frosted look? Hahahaha! Standard soundtrack a better listen? Hahahaha! I won't be fooled!

Bought mine in HMV Manchester... I'm wondering if this just effects the ones that were sold in UK ?
I have no idea why the last poster thinks this is a wind up... and whats so funny with "Frosted"... that seemed the best way to describe the way they look !

Bought mine from HMV London on the day of release - NO problems here, discs look fine and play fine.

I wasn't doing an awful lot of laughing when I took the discs out of the pack this morning frown

I'd be interested to know if anyone from outside the UK has found this problem.

In this case I'm forced to agree with Thor, but only because the UE is so edited and disjointed towards the end, that listening to the whole thing becomes a frustrating experience.

I really dig the UE. Now it's not enough to have the music as presented in the film. Come on! I like to hear unreleased and unused material but I not gonna bitch about it if I have the ENTIRE SOUNDTRACK as presented in the film. A release like this would have been unheard of 15 years ago. BTW, all the bitching about TPM:SE isn't helping the cause for future SE releases of the Star Wars films.

I'm in the UK but I imported my TPM:UE from Intrada so I have the US edition. No frosted surfaces and it appears to play fine. I'll give it a proper spin tonight and will let you know.

If you enjoy the wretched editing on that album, enjoy. As for me, I'll listen to something a little closer to Williams' intenetions for the film and not the music as it was manhandled into the movie.

The problem with the "frosted" look of the 'Phantom Menace' UE-set has been encountered here in Germany some time ago. The same effect is happening to a lot of DVDs. Seems that some reactions with the chemicals in the clear digipacks result in this "fog" on the disc surfaces. But: you can easily clean the CD (or DVDs) under warm water with a bit of dish washing fluid or with window cleaner or alcohol.

Cheers,

Stefan

Ah - so, it's apparently not the discs themselves degrading, but rather simply something that forms on the surface of the disc, and that can be cleaned off?

Taking a quick glance at my own (US bought) copy just now, I don't notice any frost effect like that described here. I'll give them a listen later, but it wasn't that long ago that I last played them anyway, and I think they're fine.

Having just read your posts I checked my copy out. And it has gone frosted. I will now have to play them to see what damage has been done.

Bought mine from Virgin in Norwich.

Cheers

just to add I really enjoy this 2disc as well as the one disc soundtrack, I like the switching back and forth of the music during the dual sequence at the end of the film.
cheers

I checked my copy too... Well, it certainly looked like the dreaded "CD rot" to me (I'm afraid I've seen this sort of thing before, and I lost a number of laserdiscs and CDs to this phenomenon back in the early 90's).

But (and I'm grateful to Stefan for pointing it out in his post) a quick rub with an alcoholic cleaning wipe has removed the "bloom" (or frosting) which was on the surface of both discs, and I think they're going to be OK.

Thanks man!

Simon

I agree! What's wrong with having the music as it is heard in the film!? I enjoyed the original CD release but the UE is the CD I prefer. Really, what's wrong with having the music as it is heard in the film. Some of you are like a spoiled 17 year old kid who's father buys him an expensive car. At first, the kid is thrilled. Then, he complains about the cars color. Think about it.

P.S.-Played the UE about two weeks ago and no disc rot is evident. Thanks for the heads up. I'm going to make a CD-R copy, just in case!

Yeah, what's the problem? Does anyone here really think that John Williams knows more about music than George Lucas does?! Give me the film version ANY day . . .
