In the main, this is just a collection of all the bits of a Thomas Newman soundtrack I usually drop or edit out. My favourite 'thing' of his is the big lush strings accompanied by a sad or gorgeous piano theme (and some brass and horns are cool, too). I don't mind the 'quirk' in small doses, but this score seems mostly dominated by it. Even in the few, small moments when he did go for emotion, it was a bit distant and unengaging to me. Track 10 is obviously the 'door'. Musta took Bill Bernstein ages to get that right I doubt I will ever play this CD again. Sorry it took 16 years! Hahaha! I hope David In NY is OK!

Yes, I agree Thor, Oscar & Lucinda is top tier Newman. Brilliant stuff. Unstrung Heroes is in no way a bad score, it's just very low key and uninvolving. And typical, text book Newman (although parts if it do sound like Michael Convertino too, but not his best stuff either). On checking my Thomas Newman playlists, as I generally do a fair bit of whittling with his CDs, the two scores with the longest surviving running times are Saving Mr Banks and Bridge Of Spies. But whether I prefer them over things like Little Women or Shawshank Redemption or Road To Perdition or the Horse Whisperer...well...I don't know. Saving Mr. Banks is like the epitome of a Vanilla Newman score. It's so glossy and has all edges rounded. The "To My Mother" cue is the only one I can stomach. Everything else sounds like a Stepford Wife version of Newman.
