Happy July 4th to all. The holiday always brings thoughts of road trips and to a soundtrack collector that is enough of cue to speak briefly of one of the legendary recorded soundtracks, “The American Road”. What’s that you say,. “Never heard of it!” Well, most have not but to a hard core of long time collectors the existence of such a vinyl soundtrack has long been in question and the quest for a known copy of it has been a long time obsession for many. “The American Road” was a 1953 Ford Motor Company short documentary film produced essentially for its dealers. It was scored by ALEX NORTH and a 10" music vinyl LP promo was allegedly issued and sent to the dealers as well. I have personally never seen a copy of it or even a picture of it but the story remains that it was issued. I am hoping that someone on this board might have a copy squirreled away in their collections to share a picture with us. I know a guy who visited every old Ford dealer in the NYC area in the hopes of finding a copy.

So why do I show you below a copy of the great RCA LP “North of Hollywood” (RCA LSP/LPM-1445 -stereo/mono) released in 1958 (later a CD as RCA Records 1445-2-R)? First it’s a great studiotrack sampler of North’s music, conducted by himself (a long time collectible in itself), and more importantly it contains a track titled “Ode to a Western” which is from North’s score to ”The American Road,” to my knowledge the only such recording available from that film (please let me know if there are others). This LP’s RCA release number was mistakenly cited in “McNally’s Price Guide for Collectible Soundtrack Records”(1994) as that for “The American Road” soundtrack, which it is not and which has confused some collectors over the last decade.

So there you have one of soundtrack collecting’s big mysteries. Hopefully a copy of “The American Road” will surface someday. Drive safely this holiday.

Recordman -
I don't know about THE AMERICAN ROAD, but what
about the LP AMERICAN LIFE which contains
Alex North's piece "Holiday Set" along with
compositions by George Antheil, Henry Cowell,
Elie Siegmeister, et al. ?

I DO have this LP, but the cover is a plain blue
cardboard - do you know if this album ever had
a "real", specially-designed cover?

I'm not familiar with "American Life". Is this a UK/Europe pressing LP -details as to label, numbers etc?

I'm in the process of trying to reach the documentary's director, George Stoney. I will let you know if I reach him, and what his answer is.

Mike, Sorry, I should have mentioned those details. It's on SPA Records (SPA is short
for Society of Participating Artists), No.-
SPA-47. It says Made in USA; Saratoga Springs NY

Contents are -
McKonkey's Ferry Overture (George Antheil)
Sunday in Brooklyn (Elie Siegmeister)
Music Hall Overture (Frederic Jacobi)
Holiday Set (Alex North)
Saturday Night at the Firehouse (Henry Cowell)

The Vienna Orchestra, F. Charles Adler, conductor.
Sound is very definitely mono. No date on the
disc and no track timings.
Hope this helps!

As a CD, "North of Hollywood" has been released with the original LP artwork seen above, and also with a superb color photo of Brando and Leigh in STREETCAR.

***

That plain blue cover, unless I'm mistaken, indicates that your LP is a very economical reissue of the original, sans original cover. I once found a similar LP of a classical album combining Rozsa and Kodaly.

But oh, how I envy you that LP in ANY form! I saw North's "Holiday Set" listed in Schwann back in the early sixties, and tried and tried to get a copy through ordering at my local record outlet, but they never could get ahold of a copy. Probably it was already out of print even then. Sure wish somebody would reissue that disc -- looks like the companion pieces are equally worthy. How's the North? I always fantasized that it would sound like his travelogue ballet in DADDY LONG LEGS...

Preston - The North piece is fine, but not exactly top-drawer. Actually my favourite piece
is probably Henry Cowell's 'Saturday Night at the Firehouse'. The drawback to it all is the
SOUND of the thing; it's like the microphone
was in the next room...

For the poster inquiring about the cover for American Life many years ago . . . The first copy I ever got had a plain cover; the second had a real cover. Don't know why sellers had copies with blank covers, but they did.

villagarden553, The poster is still here, and yes, through the wonders of the inter-web a quick google images search will reveal what the original cover was like, and give a chance to read the liner notes. What I didn't know is that Naxos/Chandos have the music available for download, in what seemed to me to be better sound.

If anyone out there owns this record(ing), please write to wmjahn@yahoo.de. I´ll pay top bucks for it. :-)

Has anyone actually seen this promo album? Has it ever been confirmed that it really exists?

Has anyone actually seen this promo album? Has it ever been confirmed that it really exists?

NO, there is NO valid CONFIRMATION, that it really does exist: NO PHOTO, and I do not know anyone, who claims to own it.

For me the existence of this record is therefore only a rumour.

Personally I do NOT think that it does exist. Of course no one can prove its non-existence, but as long as it´s existence is not proven, I tend to think it does NOT exist.

I collect since 1986 and own over 10.000 soundtracks, so I know what I´m talking/writing about ...
