In honor of Anzi´s great thread FAVORITE QUOTES FROM HISTORY, I hereby open this

Just found this great quoute by William Goldman:

"Writing is finally about one thing: going into a room alone and doing it. Putting words on paper that have never been there in quite that way before. And although you are physically by yourself, the haunting Demon never leaves you, that Demon being the knowledge of your own terrible limitations, your hopeless inadequacy, the impossibility of ever getting it right. No matter how diamond-bright your ideas are dancing in your brain, on paper they are earthbound."

What are your favorite quotes?

"When I was a child, I thought as a child, played as a child, and learned as a child. But when I became an adult, I put away my childish things."

A fine quote of the essence and meaning of life. We grow. Their is no other parlance or remark that can change that four-letter word of life.

'We shall show mercy, but we shall not ask for it.'

Sir Winston Churchill, speech in the House of Commons, July 14, 1940

God love the fella. Only 3 posts and Winnie makes his arrival.

"My childhood's home I see again,
And sadden with the view;
And still, as memory crowds my brain,
There's pleasure in it too.

O Memory! thou midway world
'twixt earth and paradise,
Where things decayed and loved ones lost
In dreamy shadows rise,

And, freed from all that's earthly vile,
Seem hallowed, pure, and bright,
Like scenes in some enchanted isle
All bathed in liquid light.

As dusky mountains please the eye
When twilight chases day;
As bugle-notes that, passing by,
In distance die away;

As leaving some grand waterfall ,
We, lingering, list it's roar-
So memory will hallow all
We've known, but know no more.

Near twenty years have passed away
Since here I bid farewell
To woods and fields, and scenes of play,
And playmates loved so well.

Where many were, but few remain
Of old familiar things;
But seeing them, to mind again
The lost and absent brings.

The friends I left that parting day,
How changed as time has sped!
Young childhood grown, strong manhood grey,
And half of all are dead.

I hear the loved survivors tell
How nought from death could save,
Till every sound appears a knell,
And every spot a grave.

I range the fields with pensive tread,
And pace the hollow rooms,
And feel I'm living in the tombs."

Abraham Lincoln, "poet" , to friend Andrew Johnston, April 18, 1846

Thank you Philipp. smile

Work is the refuge of those who have nothing to do (Wilde).

I read that in Spanish, so may have not translated it exactly, but you get the gist. I always believed it, but if I were producing FSM CDs or writing music or making films I'd probably disagree. As it is, I have to go down the mine at 4.30 in the morning.

"Beware the beast man, for he is the Devil's pawn. Alone among God's primates, he kills for sport or lust or greed. Yea, he will murder his brother to possess his brother's land. Let him not breed in great numbers, for he will make a desert of his home and yours. Shun him, for he is the harbinger of death."
