I'm enjoying this recent development in this thread. Zerbe is top dog as far as I'm concerned.

There are several episodes such as the aforementioned "Live Bait", that I haven't watched in nearly 10 years.

The next Zerbe episode is S4's "The Amnesiac"; another one I've not watched in over a decade. Anthony Zerbe AND Steve Ihnat in the same episode! It will be a perfect storm of late '60s villainous brilliance, no matter how ho-hum the actual story.

A few of us jabbered on about Steve Ihnat in the old Wild, Wild West thread...I think our Ron Hardcastle even started an Anthony Zerbe topic.

Watched S5's "Homecoming", in which Phelps is in his old hometown taking care of some family business. Before Phelps' arrival the town is rocked by a series of murders involving Phelps' childhood friends.

The episode doesn't feel much like M:I at all. In fact, everything about this episode feels like Joe Mannix would show up at any time. "Homecoming" is still enjoyable as an M:I story, especially with its game cast: Joe Maross, Fred Beir, Loretta Swit, and Sharon Acker. I'm pretty sure every one of those actors had appeared on Mannix by this time (1970-71 TV season).

Regardless of what series it belongs in, it's not a particularly well-executed episode. But it is remarkable for showing a MI character's childhood home with topical commentary on returning Vietnam vets, and an introspective moment from Phelps. How he chooses to remember his hometown, from his carefree youth rather than its tortured present, is a very touching moment.

Frank Webb, the actor who played Seth Morley, the troubled Vietnam veteran in "Homecoming", died age 26, in a 1974 road accident:

Episode 3 in the "Anthony Zerbe on Mission: Impossible" celebration:

The Amnesiac (S4)

Zerbe and fellow late '60s-early '70s hero Steve Ihnat on the same screen! Unfortunately, they don't get to interact and gnaw the scenery like I would have hoped, but it's still a treat seeing them working together. As for the story itself, one does away with the other by episode's end.

Leonard Nimoy gets to shine in the acting spotlight as he is "hypnotized" by "Dr." Phelps. Nimoy plays up his character's fear and does so (un?)intentionally. Whatever the case, he's a delight to watch.

Zerbe gets a funny bit when he shows his impatience at Nimoy, who drones on about his "safe, warm, and happy" childhood while under "hypnosis." Zerbe just buries his face in his hand.

I see that Paramount are releasing the whole series on Blu-ray in one big box set on Nov. 17th. You'll need deep pockets as it's $145, but that's not bad for a 46 disc set.

One error in the "Amnesiac": the cigarette lighter is engraved with the date "3-19-65" but in the European UPR, it would have read "19-3-65."

Leonard Nimoy's James Coburn-ish Paris is way cooler than Mr. Sprock.

(I guess this could go in the Nerd War thread too!)

From the "What Could Have Been, But Never Was (Thank God!) thread, Jan 2 2008:

GET ME FLINT! (1970)
Directed by Gordon Douglas.
Superspy Derek Flint (Leonard Nimoy) is back at it again when he must come to Z.O.W.I.E. boss Lloyd Cramden's (Simon Oakland) aid after the latter is captured by hippie extremists. Bradford Dillman; Lee Meriwether; Pamela Tiffin; James Gregory.

Agreed all the way.

Funny you should mention Paris being "cool" and Mr. Spock.

There are episodes in which Paris dresses in hip-in-1969-70 clothes and speaks in the hip lingo of the day. Nimoy was shoving 40 around that time. I wonder if those character elements were a way to endear the then-youthful Boomer audience to his character just as Mr. Spock was "cool" with the kids over on The Star Track. After all, Spock jammed with those intergalactic Woodstockians and "reached" in a way that establishment figure Captain Kirk did not. In M:I, Paris even plays a hip rock musician in "Flip Side", a S5 episode.

...or perhaps Nimoy personally embraced those counterculture elements. He could have been on "The Persuaders!"

How about Nimoy instead of Kaz Garas co-starring with Anthony Quayle on the great, but forgotten 1969 series Strange Report before becoming M:I's Paris? Imagine Nimoy's legacy as a spy dude instead of a space guy with, what was it?, pointed teeth?

...sugar bowl haircut?

In "Butterfly" (M:I S5), Nimoy, in Kabuki makeup and posing as an Asian, lapses into Spocktalk in his dialogue with the lovely Helen Funai.

I've stated this before, but it's mildly amusing to me that after Star Trek, Nimoy remained on the Desilu/Paramount lot and still had a boss named "Jim."

Even more amusing is the episode in which a Saurian brandy bottle is in the room with him.

I take exception to Patrick White's entry for the otherwise excellent "The Missile" (S5) in his book, The M:I Dossier. White disregards the episode's "fly in the ointment" element--psycho killer John Hecker (John Beck) kidnaps Dana (Lesley Anne Warren) before she can give Phelps life-saving information. Instead, author White "dishes" gossip about how everyone apparently wanted off the series.

"The Code" (S4) is among my all-time-favorite episodes. Other than Nimoy's delightful portrayal of the Che Guevera/Fidel Castro-esque "El Líder", the episode is not well regarded. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the scenes involving Nimoy, Harold Gould, and Michael Constantine; all involved gave fine performances. Special mention must be made of Constantine's character, "Janos", and his "piss-colored" glasses.

Forget "Mr. Spock"! I would be happy to watch endless adventures of Nimoy-as-"El Líder"!
