I just got the disc that combines Sarde's "The Perfume of the Lady in Black" and "The Mystery of the Yellow Room." In parts, it has somewhat minimalistic elements a la Nyman, making it rather different from anything else of Sarde's I've heard. The orchestrations are very good, and I like the disc a lot. Do tell, though, do either of these latter-day Sarde efforts incorporate themes from earlier scores of his, or do these scores represent fresh new inspiration for this composer?

Fresh inspiration only in part!
The main theme from LA MYSTERE DE LA CHAMBRE JAUNE does come from the 1988 Yves Boisset movie LA TRAVESTIE (therefore it is NOT on the Sarde/Boisset CD sampler). And track 6 of LA MYSTERE is just one complete track - without any changes - from Sarde's 1996 score LES VOLEURS ("Mouvement 3" in LES VOLEURS).
I don't have LE PARFUM DE LA DAME EN NOIR here, but I have heard it last year and so I can tell you that two further "Mouvements" (i.e. complete tracks with 3 and 4 minutes respectively) from LES VOLEURS have been simply reused there.
So all in all, you can hear almost half of the music from LES VOLEURS within these two scores.

Just a quick note for collectors:

I got my copy today, and while the back cover lists two suites, the CD itself is actually split into 16 different tracks. This one is the French import. I believe the US release was just two tracks edited together (though I may be mistaken there).

I can confirm that the contents of the suites matches up to this track listing exactly… with one interesting exception: the two “Dead Horses” cues. They are two separate pieces, but while the track list above has Part 1 at 0:59 and Part 2 at 2:15, the disc I have has Part 1 at 1:35, and Part 2 at 1:41. To make it easier:

7. Dead Horses pt.1 0:59
8. Dead Horses pt.2 2:15

7. Dead Horses pt.1 1:35
8. Dead Horses pt.2 1:41

The cumulative running time of both is the same, but either there are alternate versions between the two CDs, or the CD the above listing refers to is mistracked. Can anybody who has the latter CD confirm? Are they different pieces, or does the track mark for track 8 break up Part 1?

Hello Josh,

The track listing I provided is correct for the France issued GM/Ariola 259446. This is called "L'Ours" and has the picture of the two bears on the high tor on the cover. But the index point between track 7 and 8 seems arbitrarily placed within the track on this version too. The music doesn't stop between track 7 and 8. You're listening to it and the track just moves from 7 to 8 in the middle of the music. So I actually think that is a flaw or anomaly on that version.
Your version , I'm'guessing the domestic release,( has the cub alone on the cover), may have corrected that.

My version is the original release with the two voluminous tracks. I took some time the other day to split the tracks up myself for my digital library, that's when I realized the discrepancy between the tracks times as listed and what was on my album. As I said, the total running time of the two cues combined was the same, I guess they messed up where they put the track mark on the revised edition.

As for Sarde's re-use of themes, I just noticed another. His famous love theme from Les choses de la vie (1970) reappears in the 2004 Argentine film, Un mundo menos peor (A Less Bad Day) and I'm almost certain this theme was recycled in other films as well.

I don´t think it was recycled anywhere else, but it seems to me that in this excerpt from the Argentinean film the music comes directly from the original recording of LES CHOSES DE LA VIE. So no new arrangement or recording:

Did Sarde therefore compose any new music for this film at all? And why did he score an Argentinean film? Or did he at all and maybe only already pre-existing Sarde music was reused for this film?

This is the clip that I saw myself. I have not seen the film, but I believe you are correct that this is the original Les Choses recording. I would love to know the answers to your questions as well. Did Sarde write new music?

I am the Bruno credited in the special thanks in the booklet of the Marco Polo release of THE ROOTS OF HEAVEN, so yes we know each other even if it was a long time ago.

In chronological order for those interested.

Philippe Sarde: The Bear (45:18)
chronological

14. First Night Alone/ Nightmare/ Hunter's Camp 5:33
7. Dead Horses pt.1 0:59
8. Dead Horses pt.2 2:15
12. Nervous Hunter at Night (unused) 4:48
5. Cleaning the Wounds/ Dream of the Mother's Death 2:08
13. Friendly and Safe (unused) 4:28
6. Mushrooms (unused) 1:59
3. The Dogs Arrive/ Tracking the Bears 2:12
10. Smelling the Dogs/ Moving to High Ground 1:27
9. Dog Attack 2:50
11. Teasing the Cub/ To the Box Canyon/ In Position 4:01
4. Making a Mess/ Leashed Animals (unused) 1:50
2. He Fell Like a Stone/ Mercy/ Releasing the Cub 1:41
15. Cougar (unused) 2:01
16. Reunion/ Winter 3:27
1. End Title 3:33

Part of track 5: the "Cleaning the Wounds" section appears between tracks 8 and 12.

Track 13: appears to be 2 tracks. The first part corresponds to the bear walking along a ridge
prior to the introduction of the female. The second part of the track is the "Bear" or "nature" theme .

Much of the score on the CD is unused. The director opted for no music or replaced the Sarde material with ambient tonalities by Laurent Quaglio, who is also credited as the sound designer.

There is Sarde material that did not make the LP/CD, making this a good candidate for expansion. The Deer Hunt is a good cue.

The Bear was the only movie I had ever seen back to back night after night. I saw it at the Eglinton Theatre downtown Toronto when it first ran in 1988 and was so taken with it I went back for a second viewing the very next night. Beautiful film and score.
