Having just watched this classic for the first time in many years, I can only repeat this sad lament: they don't make 'em like that anymore bruce marshall P.S. I didn't notice any major changes in the "special edition". Anyone know what they are?

Having just watched this classic for the first time in many years, I can only repeat this sad lament: they don't make 'em like that anymore bruce marshall P.S. I didn't notice any major changes in the "special edition". Anyone know what they are? You're right. The eighties established icons (Star Wars, Aliens, The thing) and created several new ones (Blade Runner, Predator, the terminator). They were rock solid. Nowadays it is style and visuals over content. The content isn't good to start with and the visuals are sub par. I wait for the day that people have to admit that the LOTR and HP had very bad effects. I remember 1983 when I said that Return of the Jedi was very good but that that speeder bike chase looked cheap and bad. I was almost drawn and quartered then and almost mocked to death. Now those same people are all falling over themselves saying that it never was that great. The same now happens when I mention the piss poor quality and obviousness of the LOTR and HP films. Want to see CGI that is as well done as a burnt stake? See Ang Lee's Hulk. His approach is the way to do it, and shows why this guy is regarded so highly. His other films I don't care for but his approach to the Hulk made for a total jaw dropping experience when the green guy appeared on the screen. In general though I prefer actual model work even if it shows it's a model. Somehow it has more substance for me (ID4's success showed I wasn't alone on that). I like the old Star Wars of better said: The ONLY Star Wars. As a friend of my once put it: "We want fur". I got the essence of what he meant with that, and totally agreed with that expression. Spider-man is totally lost on me. I love the comics (until early eighties, then he died for me) but the new films are filled with extremely obvious and insultingly bad CGI. Example? Too many but just for the obvious: at the ending of Spider-man 2, the extremely badly toylike looking helicopters. That might have been great 10-15 years ago but nowadays even toddlers computergames have better graphics. The only bad CGI I accept is car crashes and nothing else. I want women to have curves and I want SF films to have "fur". Kind regards. D.S.

"P.S. I didn't notice any major changes in the "special edition". Anyone know what they are?" The Wampa Ice Lair sequence got redone, with more(better?) monster shots. Cloud City has lots of extra flying car shots/flyby's and added scenic views through windows and Lucas buggered with some Vader/Emperor dialogue. This one got the lesser 'makeover' of the three originals, even Lucas couldn't (belatedly) f&*k this one up, it's damned near perfect!

Cloud City suddenly has a lot of windows where there weren't any before. I kid you not.\ I'd put the "rolling eyes" icon here if I knew how to do it thx! brm

On the other hand, the shot of the Falcoln landing at Cloud City was vastly improved from the animation-heavy one in the original version. And some of the Ralph McQuarrie matte paintings were pretty obvious. The Ellenshaw ones worked, though.

Let us not forget Lucas adding that exciting moment that shows Vader traveling to his star destroyer and landing inside in the middle of the Falcon's boring escape from Cloud City. What an exciting addition to the film from Lucas. That's the one change that just mucks everything up rhythmically... possibly because it messes with the music.

P.S. I didn't notice any major changes in the "special edition". Anyone know what they are? The Special Edition is full of horrible changes and edits. Including to the soundtrack. Lets not forget Luke screaming like a little sissy boy as he jumped off the weathervane. The Special Edition edit is unwatchable. Oh, boy. I still loved it.

I think.i.may hafta amend my opening statement. They do, sometimes , still make 'em like that. I think THE DARK KNIGHT achieved the same high level of rich character, great visuals, and adult storytelling, in a fantasy- action setting. Check it out#
