“Matt Helm” was a fictional US counterintelligence agent created by author, Donald Hamilton. “Helm” appeared in about 27 novels by Hamilton and was a contemporary of the original “James Bond” by Ian Fleming. Four of the books were made into films, each starring Dean Martin, who took a more comedic approach to the Helm character, and the films played loosely with the novels. The films always featured bevies of beautiful women, and swinging music of the time. The four films were “The Ambushers”; “The Silencers”; “Murderers’ Row” and “The Wrecking Crew”.

Lp soundtracks were released for “The Silencers” ( Elmer Bernstein){RCA LSO-1120/LOC-1120} and “Murderers’ Row” (Lalo Schifrin) {Colgems COSO-5003/COMO-5003} (see photo below). Of the two, it has been “Murderers Row” which has become the more sought after collectible, especially as I believe it has not seen legitimate CD release yet.

As the typical Sixties’ liner notes say:
“It’s touch-and-go-gos!
It’s hit-and-misses!
It’s an honest-to-badness sky-high game of swing-and-slay!”

How does this compare to, say, Lalo's UNCLE and Mission Impossible music?

How does this compare to, say, Lalo's UNCLE and Mission Impossible music?

It's jazzier,if that's possible, and similar in style to Mission Impossible moreso than U.N.C.L.E. I think. It's Lalo at his best. My favorite cue is the last one on the album; "I'm Not the Marrying Kind" which is rather laid back
compared with the other cues, and suits the Matt Helm character perfectly. In fact,it suits the Dean Martin character
perfectly. Wonderful album.

Mmm... interesting one, this. Because over here in the U.K., MURDERERS' ROW was released on RCA Victor; thus I had always assumed that it had been an RCA record in the U.S. - hadn't known that it was on the Colgems label.
RCA released the album in the U.K. in stereo (SF 7843) and mono (RD 7843).

Unlike THE SILENCERS, which was never given a stereo release in this country - only in mono (RCA Victor RD 7792).

Incidentally, THE SILENCERS has never yet been issued on CD so far either.

- James.

I love this score...I'm hoping Lalo's Aleph label will someday get around to releasing it.

None of the Matt Helm soundtracks have been released on cd, with the exception of "Dean Martin sings the songs of The Silencers". I'm hoping that, at some point, all the music will be released on cd.

When was that released and on what label?
I never heard of a release on cd,let alone seen it on any websites or brick and mortar stores.

I just recently got a LP transfer of Murderer's Row. What a great score, an expanded re-release would be wonderful.

if you want the other vocal track from the movie "if You're Thinking What I'm Thinking" played in the night club sequence by Dino, Desi & Billy, it's available on the Best Of Dino, Desi & Bily CD, released by Sundazed(SC11034), I got one at Amazon.com

also there was a single of Dino's, I'm not The Marrying Kind, which appeared to be the same mix as the film, minus the orchestral bit when he finds the woman's body in the fridge,

Dino's recording of "I'm Not the Marrying Kind" can be found via the "Happiness is Dean Martin" reissue on this CD ...

This was a great discovery for me on Spotify!

I can't get the main title out of my head. The theme repeats in other tracks such as "Solaris".

Something about the theme reminds me of another film composer - one who is very active in scoring films today. Can anyone guess the composer I'm thinking of?

So....when WILL this soundtrack get a CD release?

The tune is catchy. I'd love to see a cd release, but the threads have been going on for years and nothing happens. Don't know what the holdup is; probably no elements can be found, or maybe Dean Martin's estate has something to do with it, though The Silencers came out. Surely this would sell as well as Boulevard or Nunzio by same composer.

No CD release but available as a 320 kbps, 16 bit flac and 24 bit flac download from RCA/Legacy.
