I'll resurrect this thread since it's been 5 years since the last update. Please disregard the new thread I mistakenly created. Has there been any more discussion of Tribute tackling a complete recording of this score?
The old Naxos re-recorded suite is still the best we've been given after all these years. Actually, my original negativity to that suite has been replaced by some genuine affection over time, and we're lucky to have it (though that doesn't go for the other, rather poor-sounding pieces on that "Historical Romances" CD). I find the 15-minute Gunga Din suite definitely benefits from louder-than-normal replay, which adds zip to the sound which is a bit dull at lower volumes. At a higher level, especially through headphones, it really comes alive. Anyway... here is the latest reminder that some of us are STILL hoping for a soundtrack release or more substantial re-record.
I’ll be trying to talk John & Anna into doing a complete recording of this score for our Tribute label some day. It’s probably my favorite Alfred Newman score, and the suite I did years ago doesn’t even come close to presenting all of the great music in that score. My hands were tied with the amount of time on the disc I was given, so I tried to fit all of my favorite bits, but had to make a lot of cuts here and there. Also, I'd like to conduct it myself this time, obviously.
Too bad that this has not yet come to pass, as it's one of my very favorite Alfred Newman scores, too.
I once asked David Newman a technical question about the score; he didn't know the answer and concluded with the statement that he doesn't much like the score.
