MFTM announces the tribute event for JB in France. On a side note they claim that Maurice Jarre will meet Barry there for the first time. If I'm not completely mistaken, this is wrong. There's a foto with a couple of composers on it, among them, Jarre and Barry. If it's not just a collage, they must have met there already?

Damn, I'd kill to find out what Elfman and Williams are giggling over. Bernstein and Zimmer too - now that's an unlikely pairing!

It is my understanding that the legendary picture above was taken over several sessions. So I donĀ“t think all of them were present at once, but rather in smaller groups (or perhaps even one at a time). Unfortunately.

Haven't seen that photo for a while but just noticing...

Where was Basil Poledouris?

I mean James Newton Howard and Mark Isham are there, but no Basil?

Doesn't seem right.

I'd heard of but never seen this photo - not realising that Movie Boulevard now use it on their website, with the composer group as if they're sitting in their shop in Leeds (as if they'd sit in a shop full of b**tlegs of their works!)!

It's obvious to me the original Vanity Fair pic as above is a montage, as Eric Morecambe used to say about Ernie Wise: 'You can see the join!'.

Chris,

Do you have a high rez scan of this that you could send me? I would be most appreciative.

What a wonderful montage...

Ditto that. I'd love to finally be able to read the insers over the composers.

I'd love to have one too, if it's possible.

Thanks

No it doesn't, especially when Marvin Hamlisch is in it, and he hasn't been active in films in decades. I would have liked to have seen Rachel Portman and / or Shirley Walker as well.

Anyone besides me meet both of them? They were great and each gave me the time of day, too.

Even if one doesn't take into account the difficulty of assembling all the above persons in one place at one time, the photo, even in its less-than-high-resolution form, is clearly a composite made up of numerous individual components.

What you might not know about Movie B is this: When Barry was asked "Do you have a fan club?" in 1998 (I forget which mag it was), he said, "No, but there are a couple of guys in Leeds who do something." He was referring to Movie B. They used to run the John Barry appreciation society in the 70s and 80s. They published the International Film Music Journal and The Composer.

Though Barry probably never sat in their shop, he did correspond with them (still does, as far as I know).

Not that that changes your point, which is very valid.

Cheers

I read an interview with Lalo Schifrin and he said he had recently spoken with Barry. Without digging for the details, my impression was that this was around the time of the Vanity Fair photo. Maybe two of the coolest dudes from the 60s were there at the same time.

I also read somewhere once that Barry attended the premiere of Night of the Generals, so he probably met Jarre there.

And Barry was a big Dizzy Gillespie fan (Schifrin had been an arranger for Gillespie).
