“Long John Silver” (aka “Long John Silver's Return to Treasure Island”} was a 1954 Australian film starring Robert Newton, as the title character, reprising his 1950 role in Disney’s “Treasure Island”, and Kit Taylor, who took over the tragic Bobby Driscoll’s earlier role as “Jim Hawkins”. The film is really just an adventure sequel to “Treasure Island”, here with Long John Silver fighting other pirates, and allows us to once again enjoy Newton’s role in what has become the stereotypical “pirate” image and speech. (To see a clip, go to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XscAfAY3vo )
In 1955-1959, he and many of this cast reprized their roles in a television series (“The Adventures of Long John Silver”).

The score to ”Long John Silver” was composed and conducted by David Buttolph (1902-1983), featuring the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. RCA released an LP of the score on a mono 10” LP in 1955 (RCA LPM-3279). (See below) The album itself has long been a high-end, top rare collectible.

Newton died of a heart attack, aged 50, in 1956.

I have the 10" and also the 45EP set. Of course, one of my favorite "bad movies" is BLACKBEARD THE PIRATE with Newton in the lead. He actually growls "Ahharrrrrggg" several times. His acting is beyond belief. Fortunately he redeemed himself in THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY.

Many believe the over-the top Newton actually voiced the *first* "Ahharrrrrggg" big grin

Not a single new note had been composed for the TV series "The Adventures of Long John Silver" - they used the same music tracks over and over again from the original David Buttolph score. The 10" LP contains only a smidgen of all the tracks that were recorded.

Its too bad this film has never been given a proper digital video transfer in stereo (the film was in stereo) rather than the poor public domain copies we are forced to watch!

Although I haven't seen it, VCI has apparently released Long John Silver on an anamorphic widescreen DVD. According to VCI, "The film has been faithfully restored to its full widescreen CinemaScope glory with beautiful rich color and detail. The very entertaining soundtrack has likewise been restored from a rare original 4-track recording and remixed to Dolby Digital 5.1."

Disques Cinémusique released a download, probably of the LP (same cue total):

I have this DVD, which I had to pay a pretty penny for, as it is now out of print. It is indeed in stereo, which is a joy to listen to, but VCI screwed up the aspect ratio of the picture by transferring it at an aspect ratio that is too wide, making everyone look short and squat.

I don't know about you, but I have a feature on my TV to widen the image from broadcasts or DVDs, but I have no way of squeezing an image back to its normal size.

Yes, this seems to duplicate the contents of the RCA 10" LP. I must say that the quality seems quite nice, far better than I was ever able to extract from my 45-RPM EP set. It has the added reverb that Disques Cinemusic always adds to the mono recordings they re-issue, but in this case, it is used judiciously and is quite pleasing.

I look forward to downloading this.

If the 10" LP is only a smidgen of all the tracks, I wonder how wonderful must be the complete score! Buttolph at his best in my opinion. Deserves a research and a release.

The whole film is up on Youtube. It looks like the VCI version (with the incorrect anamorphic transfer), but it is in mono, unfortunately.

Your mission, Jim, is to break down what cues in the film are missing from the LP.
