I have the original MCA CD and it sounds just awful, and i mean awful, almost like a bad boot itself. And there's a constant tinnitus-like high-pitched sound in the background!

So yes, definitely overdue for a remaster, as badly as it gets.

(Yeah, sorry, double post, one for each channel...)

Definitely needs a complete release.

Wonderful score but the 25 minutes on the official release seems enough.

I've never seen the movie but I've always enjoyed that selection on the CD. Almost like a suite, if you will. It's been a long time since I've played it, is the sound bad as someone mentioned previously?

I had no idea. When he was a kid, did he think the celebrations were for his birthday?

It sounds OK to me but that's not to say a little remastering couldn't improve the sound on a recording from almost 30 years ago.

Pretty sure the soundtrack was all re-recorded so the complete score would all be new. Def need this in my life.

Two Spielberg-Williams collaborations appeared that fall. The other, Always, seemed like the more promising one: Aviation, romance, western scenery, firefighting, Richard Dreyfuss, Audrey Hepburn. We expected less from Tom Cruise as a disgruntled vet. But things turned out otherwise, didn't they?

Another 1989 memory: Buying the album in a record store (remember those?), the clerk said that Edie Bracknell had a great rendition of "A Hard Rain." I wondered what on earth he was talking about, never having heard of the singer of the song.

Sorry: Brickell. Damn small print!

I must give it another listen sometime soon. Maybe I should have a look at the movie, though I'm no fan of Tom Cruise.

"Two Spielberg-Williams collaborations appeared that fall.."
---------------------
There were two in the year (Indy 3/Last Crusade and Always), but Born On The 4th July wasn't Spielberg, it was Williams' first collaboration (of three) with Oliver Stone.
And for the record, I adore Always score (Top 10 Williams for me).

Yes and no. ALWAYS was no doubt a fiasco at the time. But I've come to really appreciate it as the Victor Fleming tribute it was. And I've even come to love Williams' score - a score that I for many years considered one of his weakest.

Really? I hear beautiful, silvery trumpet tone, realistic strings, and effective integration of modernistic elements (Corigliano influence?) and even a dash of rock drums. While, I don't recall the rest of the music, I do appreciate a rendering that is not padded out to 70 minutes with needless repetition.

I haven't played it for a while, but I don't recall there being any sound problems on the old MCA release.
And although it's quite short for a Williams album, those 25 minutes are perfect to me.
I do have the extended edition, but the main meat of the score is already within the 25 minutes for me.

Are we talking about the same unofficial "expanded edition" here that's been around for years? For the life of me I can't understand the comments that go like "Oh, we really don't need an official expanded and remastered edition of BOT4OJ, that old 20 minute CD from 1989 is good enough"…

Have you actually listened to the full score? Only yesterday I rewatched the film after maybe 25 years and I was just blown away by it. I was moved to tears by the story, the tragedy, the immersive moviemaking style of Oliver Stone (finding its peak of course two years later in JFK) - and also the score. This is Williams at his finest, at his absolute peak. And of course there's some new and exciting material, like the "Wargames" cue when the kids play in the woods at the beginning. The sense of foreboding is just pure Williams magic.

I also want the original tracks, "remixed and remastered from the original pristine first generation elements by Mike Matessino".

So, after ALWAYS (which, most ironically, is a MUCH better listening experience in its short, old form IMHO) getting the deluxe treatment, how long can it be until BOT4OJ is due? How any true film music (and John Williams!) fan can NOT want this is an absolute mystery to me.

NB: I almost forgot I started a thread of my own last year and it contains some interesting thoughts and opinions, too, I think:

I rewatched this movie the other day and actually posted in a LaLa thread hoping maybe they would consider a release of an expanded score like they have done with so many other John Williams scores.

This is one of JW's most arresting and emotional score, in my opinion, and deserves better treatment than it has received.

The main theme brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it.

This score really needs a new release!

I agree with afn, this one needs a proper extended, remastered release like so many John Williams scores have had. A stunning score in many ways.

I love the trio of scores Williams composed for Oliver Stone movies. Powerful, emotional intense.

Bumping on this post, as I would LOVE a good, solid expanded version of this score. It was Oscar nominated - (probably should have won) and was one of JW's best for a dramatic, non Spielberg, no HP, Non SW movie...IMO

Completely agree. Hope it will happen.
