What a stunning and beautiful piece of music! This is stirring and emotional scoring at best, and it is one of Barry´s best cues. A formidable exercise in scoring and just a plain wonderful listening experience.

Any thoughts?

Philipp

What's odd is that the track playing in the background was "The Buffalo Hunt (Album Version)" as I loaded the message board and saw your thread on top.

Both versions are fantastic, though.

I suppose the film version is a little anochronistic with the rest of the score. It's like outta nowhere comes this rousing western stuff, but damn is it powerful!

Philipp, you should probably mention you are talking about Dances With Wolves. Sure, most of us know right off the bat what "Buffalo Hunt film version" entails. But still...as a courtesy to those not privy...

Best score of 90's !

Is that even debatable?

I remember back in the day when all we had was the original album. It was so frustrating not having this piece, as well as the choral music for the opening "suicide run". Adding insult to injury, SONY released the special Gold edition, with "bonus tracks": the fire dance and the pop Dunbar theme. *shudder*

What a blessing the expanded album is!

I recall someone pointing out that one of their favorite tracks (where Dunbar returns Kicking Bird to the village) was still missing. I personally don't remember this music, but I'm sure it's a shame it didn't make the cut. Maybe we'll get an expanded expanded edition! Come to think of it we could use one of those for Star Trek: The Motion Picture. If only SONY would cater to our small film score corner of the universe (or let someone else).

There is no debate. The jury has been in on that one for awhile now. DWW has yet to be topped. Greatest score of the last 17 years

Actually ALIEN 3 is the best film score of the 90's. Get your indisputable facts right, guys. Geez.

No absolutly no ! DWW is the best score of 90's; nobody does it better than John Barry.

Fine cue.

I recently picked up a comp. that includes Rosenthal's buffalo hunt cue from RETURN OF A MAN CALLED HORSE.
I have not seen the film, but it is an outstanding cue - better even than JB"s, musically!

Better than Schindler's List? I love Dances with Wolves and it is a bueatiful score, but the best of the 90's? NO.

The reason for two versions of the Buffalo Hunt is the Album version is Preferred by Barry, and Costner was scared to ask Barry to rewrite the Buffalo Hunt, he knew that Barry doesn't do rewrites.

Barry did do two rewrites. On the Expanded Album there is the two versions of the Buffalo Hunt. Costners version is more Western Style, while Barrys is more understated.

I personally prefer the album version. A matter of taste, I guess.

I think Sony fooled us twice:
- a SACD release of a 1990s score in stereo
- an expanded edition that still omits a considerable amount of music (I think Stephen Woolston may have the details...)

Better than nothing, though!

Whilst I concur that [John] Barry is best ... I can't agree that Dances With Wolves is the best score of the 1990's / of the last 17 years.

I think the score is wonderful (the film is possibly my favourite film of all time - in the extended edition, of course) but best score ...

... for me that title lies at the feet of The Specialist - JB's instrumental score, of course!

That is a wonderful score. Those low frequency brass clusters are so powerful. Nobody does it quite like Barry. Nice love theme in this one too. Tragic and beautiful. What a laughably dreadful film this is. Although James Wood's pen-bomb scene always cracks me up. What a ham.

Or perhaps Alfred Newman ... I remember reading somewhere that Costner wanted the cue to have more of a "How the West Was Won" feel, which I think the rewrite accomplished.
