Currently reading: Dr Bloodmoney by Philip K Dick - about survivors in a post-apocalyptic world, where people have mental powers and animals are rapidly evolving. It's actually pretty good, with some memorable scenes and ideas, and i've gone through the first 130 pages pretty quickly.

Previously, i couldn't finish Monday Starts On Saturday by the Strugatsky brothers. The first 80 pages were alright enough but the plot was to whacky and the humour all over the place. A wizarding college needs a computer programmer for reasons i'll never find out. Not really my sort of story and it took forever to get going and then just totally lost me.

Prior to that I'd read some great older sci-fi stuff, including The Stars My Destination, Gateway, and The Space Merchants.

THE CIVIL WAR: A Narrative - Volume 2 by Shelby Foote.

About as intricate, detailed and informative and flat out entertaining as one could ever, ever hope for in a Civil War historical book. Shelby Foote's writing style is smooth and fluid and just flat out enjoyable to read. But he gets into the minds of many the historical participants and also spends a good deal of time if many of the theaters of the war that most tend to either skim or flat out skip. An absolute must read for any American Civil War enthusiast.

I nearly bought the collection a few years ago after watching the Ken Burns documentary and seeing him on it. Good to know his books are good.

Currently reading Dan Simmon's The Fall of Hyperion.... pretty epic space opera. Would make a great show ala his novel The Terror.

I'm also nearing the end of The Wheel of Time. Ten books down and four to go! Looking forward to the TV show. Being 10 books in, and probably 11 or 12 by the time the first season premiers, I should be safe from spoilers!
