I finally saw the film which was only average.

NGS' score had a good main theme that got used too little throughout the film, and quite a bit of his Media Ventures sound.

I'm a bit surprised that the score is not released, it would be perfect for a label like Varese, considering they release a lot of far more obscure stuff than this.

Opinions?

Although I have generally liked the films of Peter Hyams (and loved some of them), the bad press and unfinished FX stories about this one made me avoid it. I listened to the score from one of those promo/dodgy jobs, but it was a bit too MV/RC for me. Not terrible, just nothing new. I am looking forward to the new Hyams film which David Shire is rumoured to be scoring.

I got around to this film just now.

Actually, I thought it was loads of fun, with some excellent action setpieces. The basic concept is cool too. Of course, the effects were pretty mediocre for a 2005 film, but the production design was quite nice (the interlacing of the city and the jungle, in particular).

A good, old-fashioned 'creature feature'/time travel movie from the capable hands of Peter Hyams. By no means a high quality film, but I was entertained.

Glennie-Smith's score was quite good (I immediately recognized the MV sound, but didn't know it was him) - some funky exotic grooves and sweeping melodies. But also some rather uninteresting sneaking-around cues.

It's one of those films that could easily have become a franchise, had it been slightly better and more A list in execution.

I'm one of those people who quite like the film (got the DVD from Amazon for something like £2.50!). The SFX at the start are just awful, but the second half of the film, when things start to change, they're very good & effective. Maybe they did that lot of SFX first, before the money ran out, or whatever happened. I can't remember the music, I'll give the DVD another spin.

Yeah, that clip where the guy and the girl are walking through the city, they are so clearly walking on a treadmill, because in addition to their odd walk pattern, the greenscreen in the background moves faster than their actual pace! But it definitely gets better when the production design gets to shine and there's less reliance on CGI.

Yeah, that shot is the pits, I can see them laughing at the cinema, but the creatures are very good, as is the whole earth changing bit (like a very bad dream).

you mean that legendary shot of a monster that disappears in the dark and only its red eyes still continue to shine?

That movie was hilariously bad piece of garbage. One of the worst things I've ever seen, but still it was so dumb it was sometimes quite funny. The score... well... nothing worth a second of release on its own.

White eyes. That's actually a nice shot, I think. Quite creepy.

I wouldn't be that harsh. It's no JURASSIC PARK or anything, but it has definitely value. I'd put it in the same category as Stephen Sommers' films - unadulterated fun with some great action setpieces (the trek through the city, the ape attacks, the subway scene).

Geezes. I'm looking at my replies here from 12 years ago, and have no memory whatsoever of watching this film.

Never heard of it. How did Ben Kingsley go from Gandhi to making so many trashy fantasy films? LOL

Even something as weird as WHAT PLANET ARE YOU FROM? is a pure masterpiece compared to this...
Kingsley got even worse since those times... Bruce Willis of his generation sort of. Except he used to be a pretty good actor (Still in those DEATH AND THE MAIDEN times).

Ha, I still have the DVD, & the resurrection of this thread makes me want to watch it again. I think it's a good screenplay & done properly it could be a pretty good film (esp. with todays CGI). The DVD looks to be deleted, but you can still buy it s/h dirt cheap.
