It was posted over at chimai that the new Morricone release "Butterfly",[ is a terrible recording, distorted mush and sounds as though it was recorded in a swimming pool. Ah well but it should never have been released like this, does no service to the Maestro].

I don't know if anyone here was thinking of ordering this cd (I know I was) after reading this however I've now changed my mind.

Thanks to Reduced Wolf for posting this on chimai, and apologies for "borrowing portions of your post"

I have the Prometheus version of BUTTERFLY... so, I can't compare both editions, but I will stick with my original one! smile

The previous mono edition doesn't sound the best either when compared to the LP. A shame they obviously didn't improve it even now. Thanks for the warning Chris.

I have the LaserLight issue. Where does that stand in the rankings, or is that about as good as it's going to get?

It's a really nice score, by the way - very delicate.

I've owned both the Laslight and Prometheus editions of this score (replacing the former with the latter) ~ similarly Hundra.

It's probably wishful thinking but I'd go for the Prometheus release as having better sound. I do know that the physical product is far better than the cheapo-looking Laserlight release.

I also owned the vinyl LP release (I can't recall the label) ... now that was rubbish ... crackles and pops throughout.

Ignoring the non Morricone tracks, the LP release (now released by GDM) contains far less music than the Laserlight/Prometheus releases but there is a small amount of music there not on the Laserlight/Prometheus releases. Most aggravating!

Just a correction: the rcent CD was released by Dagored, and not by GDM.
This new CD was recorded/"mastered" from vinyl source using declicker and denoiser filters, and the result is of course horrible.

The Laserlight CD has the same content as the earlier Prometheus release. Both are in mono, but the sound is acceptable.

'I also owned the vinyl LP release (I can't recall the label) ... now that was rubbish ... crackles and pops throughout.'

Not sure what LP release you had, but the General Music France release I have is a beautiful stereo recording without much noise at all. Perhaps more interesting than this though is that a number of the pieces sound like different takes, even though I do not believe they are. Just that the recording is so much better on the LP, the echoing harps for instance really stand out on the LP, making the cues sounds completely different to the mono Prometheous recording.
So if you want to appreciate the score to BUTTERFLY in full you need the CD and the LP. But I cannot comment on the quality of the Dagored CD release (I am surprised it is so bad even though they may have mastered it from the vinyl, that should be no excuse for a bad sounding CD).

I completely agree. The LP contains different tracks compared with the CD. The sound of the General Music France LP and escpecially of the German vinyl album is crystal clear, simply excellent. So if you want to enjoy the score in the most complete form, try to get one of these vinyl album and combine it with the Prometheus/Laserlight CD.
But ignore the Dagored CD, which is a mess...

Thanks, Malena, for the correction re: Dagored (I should have checked but wrote from memory).

The vinyl LP I had (have? - not sure if it's still in the box on the garage) was the US Applause Records release.

Like so many US vinyl albums (MCA releases of Somewhere In Time and Out Of Africa come quickly to mind) the quality was awful. The music clarity may be better (my hi-fi then was probably not that good to notice) but the constant surface noise meant that the CD release is vastly superior.

I recently acquired the Prometheus CD of BUTTERFLY. Until reading the posts above, I didn't realize that the sound on the CD was mono. It sounds quite full to me, at least through loudspeakers. Nothing in the eight-page booklet says a word about the music or the source of the recording. But apparently stereo sources exist, as other posts above indicate.

As for the music itself, I like the score It matches the film's tone--which is kind of a backwoods Peyton Place. Morricone's score even has some Waxman-like moments.

Here's the main theme:

This track sounds like it could come from Waxman's Peyton Place or Bernstein's Far From Heaven:
