You don't say....

Well I was half expecting a rush of votes from angry 'pro-Jodie' fans, because there are many of them, just to make a point to the 'no female Doctor' fans. It really would not have surprised me.

Some cracking photos taken at this weekend's Science Of The Time Lords event in Leicester:

It's pretty amazing that we have such an opposite reaction to this, Paul. I think Chibnall's writing this season is much better than most anything in the Moffat era (but obviously not on Davies level). I also think Jodie Whitaker is much better than, say, Matt Smith, who I never cared for. I'm fairly optimistic of the direction it's heading in, although we now have to wait more than a year for the next episode.

If your opinions were prefaced with a Boolean "NOT" they would agree with mine.

It is mildly surprising that those female fans of a female Doctor aren't exactly voting in their, what? dozens? Because I did expect exactly as you say. Seems there aren't that many compared with those who voted for the first four New Series Doctors.

I knew Capaldi wasn't the most popular choice so wasn't TOO surprised he never got a gong. Though I put as much of that down to Moffat's handling of the show and the constantly shifting slot as much as the less popular older Doctor (which I was fine with until they made him fit what I see as the New Series template for the character, which was for me going against his original stance of not "doing what David and Matt did").

On your point Thor, I agree that the break from overly complicated - how clever am I - type 'timey-wimey' nonsense (great in small doses but ended up in overkill mode) is welcome. Sadly I feel Chibnall's move is too far over the other side, ending up in dull stories, with little or no threat. The idea of lessening the leadership role of The Doctor making her just one of the gang takes away the lead character's appeal. As for Matt, sorry mate but I do disagree here as I thought he tapped into a very 'traditional' essence of the character despite his years - and beyond the Troughtonesque bow tie.

The larger cast hasn't worked as one in particular - Yaz - has been almost ignored. Annoying to me as surely the point of having a police officer in the mix could result in a well organised level headed person to rely on. All the talk about 'diverse casting' was so pointless. We've been perfectly happy with diverse casting since day one without such underlining - most female companions since 2005 have had black partners and one of the most popular characters in the first four years was gay/ominsexual. So nothing new except to make us aware that there's an exercise in box ticking going on. In fact what we've ended up with is the white middle aged male, Bradley Walsh, being best written for anyway!

But yes, great photos. The Ice Warrior is wonderful, and beats the 'real' thing in the last few years hands - or is that clamps/claws - down!

Some more bits and pieces from the Whoniverse lately. Lots of interesting stuff coming out of David Tennant's new podcast series, in particular.

A fair bit of stuff to report since last week but it's not all going in one post.

First, the production team have finished in South Africa and they're now back filming in Swansea. The police box prop was photographed in Swansea Guild Hall, and there are a fair few photos. Fans have been getting selifies with the cast.

Lots of photos here:

Also, Steven Fry is doing a guest spot!

In other news, filming has started this morning on a complete remake of 1965's standalone episode 'Mission To The Unknown' at the University Of Central Lancashire, for possible inclusion on a future bluray set. Peter Purves confirmed it this morning. The episode is notable for having none of the regular cast members in it. The episode was effectively a prequel to The Dalek's Masterplan, with Edward De Souza playing Space Security Agent Marc Cory. Both Purves, De Souza and Nicholas Briggs are all involved.

Only got halfway through this new series. Kept the episodes on my DVR for six months but realized I no interest in finishing up the series. Its just milk toast. Deleted them to make room for other recordings.

I'm just a casual viewer of the series, but it seems weird that this Doctor is suddenly getting all Doc Brown about changing the timeline. What happened to timey being all wimey?

So, lots to catch up on.

First, a story from the Mirror (who had a damn good record for leaks in 2017/18) claiming the series is moving back to Saturdays.

Filming on the remake of Mission To The Unknown is now complete. The project was done in three days.

John Levene (Sergeant Benton) launched his autobiography at the weekend, titled 'Run The Shadows, Walk The Sun', published by Fantom. Here's one of the photos from the centre of the book(!): https://twitter.com/InflatableDalek/status/1099393016928890881

Never thought I'd agree with a quote like this, as a lifelong fan. The more I see the less I want to see. If they can't get the Daleks right there really is no hope.

And please don't anyone bother to tell me it was a cobbled together job. It still managed to get itself the power of flight and superior (so far unseen) weaponry! Ultimately it looked awful.

S12 filming has just taken place in Tenerife.

Frazer Hines has voiced his opinion on Season 11:
https://www.femalefirst.co.uk/tv/news/frazer-hines-blasts-doctor-who-swapping-monsters-history-lessons-1191004.html

Jenna Coleman stole props from the show:
https://metro.co.uk/2019/04/06/jenna-coleman-stole-piece-tardis-doctor-stole-quite-lot-actually-9125291/?ito=article.desktop.share.top.twitter

Have to say, Coleman doesn't strike me as the type to hang Doctor Who stuff on her walls.

The Doctor Who Annual 1972 has *finally been released*, 47 years late. wink
http://www.doctorwhonews.net/2019/03/the-unofficial-dr-who-annual-1972.html

Trivia:

Co-creator Sydney Newman tried to take over the show in the late 80s and bring back Patrick Troughton. Similarly, Verity Lambert's company Cinema Verity tried to take over the show and cast Peter Cook in the lead role.

And finally, some pics from Lalla Ward's knitting book. smile

The last series seemed to be made by people who didn't really like Doctor Who and wanted to make a propaganda series that was just hung on a famous show everyone would watch. I didnt warm up to any of it until that last end of the year show with the return of the toothy guy, and then only because there was more running lol. The daleks part was not really daleks enough. It took the whole season to invest in any feels or concern for how the characters end up. Whitaker kept getting lost in her own show. Incessant SJW finger waggling made it a disappointment. And that's why I need to turn on the self-censoring filter. Bye.

The BBC have put out a press release regarding an episode in Season 12, filming now in Gloucester. Spoiler warning, obviously!

As it's in a public place and photos would soon be swirling around social media, I imagine they had no choice but to announce it officially. Don't get too excited.

I'd rather have some old companions back. In 11 series all we've had is Sarah and K9. Thats it. Disappointing (and I don't count Jo and the Brig in The SJS Adventures).

They have been a lot more relaxed about filming in Gloucester this time round...Jodie Whittaker even went on a small walkabout in costume....last time Dr Who was filmed here was The Next Doctor, and the crowd that turned up didn't exactly help matters....a lot more subdued and friendly this time round....I've tried to get to see some of it but not had a lot of luck

Tons of photos on social media. I expect they're all be compiled into an article on the news sites later today.
