Despite the rather short list of films which he scored I think that André Previn is one of the finest film composers and thanks to labels such as FSM and Rhino we are lucky to have some of his best works available. Next to these, Previn also scored the 1957 film Designing Woman for MGM so I presume it might be a candidate for FSM's 12th year ? Unless the masters would be too deteriorated (which I hope not!). To my knowledge there are already 2 cues available, a theme on the Varese Sarabande 2CD "The Lion's Roar" and a source cue on Rhino's "North By Northwest". But it's the FSM super-deluxe treatment for this score that would really make the Previn fans happy. That said, there are surely more of his titles begging for a CD release -- Inside Daisy Clover, Two For The Seesaw etc. etc. As Mr. Previn is turning 80 this April, some of these titles could do a nice celebration. Would anyone else like to see more Previn on CD ? Yes, very much. I'm sure there are many titles from which great CD album presentations could be drawn. I'd very much like to have his music from "Challenge to Lassie", "Kim", "Shadow on the Wall", "The Outriders" and any others from his prolific output in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

I'd certainly be up for any release of this Previn score, perhaps paired with another score in a light comedic vein by Previn or someone else from MGM. (Franz Waxman's stereo score for COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS is nice.) My impression is, however, that you boys, after talking it up, generally don't buy romantic/comedy scores in any great numbers after Lukas puts them out on FSM, and so he is often stuck with expensive drink coasters---and that's unfortunate. Incidentally, another cue from DESIGNING WOMAN which has been released on CD is Dolores Gray's song, "Music Is Better Than Words", in the same pre-recording featured in the 1955 IT'S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER. (In the back of my mind I've always felt there was something odd about the score for DESIGNING WOMAN, which was released in 1957. I wonder if it was yet another of those 1957-1958 films caught up in the Musician's Strike. Do we recognize any of the other Previn music in the film coming from an earlier Previn score and re-used in this?)

Mr. Previn's scoring for PORGY AND BESS is nothing short of astounding! He received high praise at the time as well continued interest in the property. I find it a real crime that all this material is being held ransom, because of subjective opinion by the Gershwin estate. I know there are "issues" with the film due to its subjcet matter, the time it was made, the director, and what was considered acceptable at the time, however, to hold the music and performances hostage is a crime. I came to love the score of PORGY AND BESS Through the films performances, and AP's handling of it all. This is my favorite version of this music. What a glorious holy grail to have PORGY AND BESS in a full, expanded, restored CD.

Unfortunately, with Warner not licensing to the labels, I don’t see a release of Designing Woman happening in the foreseeable future (setting aside the condition of the tapes if they still survive).
