So Robert Evans let spill in an interview ages ago that Ralph Burns composed and/or adapted a score for (at least) the source music that Evans tossed out, for which he hired Bob Wilber to replace.

And there's also lots of source music that never made it onto the LP, including the unforgettable Sydney Goldsmith squealing "Struttin' wit' Some Barbecue".

Aah, if only we could hear both scores, and not just the notes that were needed onscreen.....

I'd be happy if we could just have the complete John Barry score released.

I would too, but I love the lp/cd we have. It's a real guilty pleasure of mine.

No guilty pleasure at all! While I willingly stand with those who'd lobby for the complete Barry contribution, The Cotton Club score as released is absolutely incredible! There isn't a bad arrangement in the lot, and the "Mood Indigo" cover is a personal fave.

cool

"MINNIE THE MOOCHER" alone makes this an indispensable cd.

... probably my second least favourite track (after Copper Colored Gal) in the whole - wonderful - album. Yes, please, to more of JB's score (the additional theme(s) incorporated in the Silva Screen re-recording is(are) pretty good).

My favourites of the non-Barry tracks are Creole Love Call and Daybreak Express.

One of my oldest CDs.

Vince Giordano and his Nighthawks did tracks for THE COTTON CLUB, as they did for THE AVIATOR.

I was wrong. It was "Barbecue Bess".

I enjoyed the Wilber versions of the tunes and I think I now know why.

I recently heard the Ellington recording of "Ring Dem Bells"

(#46, here: https://archive.org/details/V-discs1-991943-1944)

The Wilber versions seem to have made special efforts to copy EXACTLY the vintage performances. It's pretty amazing.

Hmmm. They're not credited on the LP, as I recall.

You know, I hounded the labels about CAGED and we finally got it.

Now, I'm going to campaign relentlessly*, until we get the COTTON CLUB source music, both versions.

*Once a year! big grin

I read the section of Bob Wilbur's autobiography about the Cotton Club. He really wanted to do the entire score, but noted how they weren't going to do that due to his inexperience in film. He wrote they brought Barry in to compose the score and oversee everything, and that Wilbur learned from that experience.

Surely, there's an album's worth of Barry score that could be released?

Exactly. When it comes to this score surely the unreleased Barry portion would be the one people are interested in? The two tracks released are sublime and for me the only 'takeaway' from the album.

Guys, this is a discussion of the source music, not Barry's score.

I got this book from the library because you mentioned it here. It was VERY interesting. Thanks for posting the info, VG!

I was just wondering if there's a chance anything has changed regarding ownership of this score? The recent release of The Golden Child makes me feel there's some hope that one day Barry's score to this could get a release.

http://www.intrada.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=3646&p=43257&hilit=the+cotton+club#p43257

Roger Feigelson writes:

"There's barely 20 minutes of underscore on the film. And...no one seems to claim ownership of the full score or have elements. So all we could do was reissue the Geffen album...."

Ownership/legal issues could still be a problem. But if they get that resolved AND find the music tracks, I want the 20 minutes of Barry's underscore in addition to all the source music! Let's hope it was all stuck in the back of a closet at FFC's house.
