Full disclosure...I don't really like the theme that much (like the female singer who tells us she doesn't either, during the rehearsal track on the CD).
The female vocalists aren't very good, were they? That's just imo of course.
However, I've always liked Jack Sheldon, the fellow who warbles a version, even though he was---also imo--a better trumpet player than he was a singer.
This begs the question: Were the vocalists instructed to "channel" Billie Holiday?
It's a shame Sinatra never recorded it. Wouldn't have been farfetched, given his and Williams' connection at the time. I think it would have fit him wonderfully.
I think the reason Sheldon was chosen to sing this over the credits is that his voice believably represents Terry Lennox when he appears on the screen. A crooner like Steve Lawrence or Matt Monroe would not have been as convincing.

Was Jack Sheldon another West Coast Jazz talent who found work playing on film scores as a trumpeter?
While Jack is rightly famous for his "Schoolhouse Rock" fame, I never made that connection. Instead, I knew his work best from his excellent trumpet work with the Curtis Counce Group, whose albums I listened to incessantly back in the '90s. Absolutely love that group.

Perhaps someone has compiled a list of all the recorded vocal versions.
