Hey guys, I'm really interested in this set, but was wondering why the copies on amazon.com have a different cover than the one at SAE. Which one should I get? Also, what do you guys think of this set?

Someone who owns this set will correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like the cover image at amazon is the cover art from the box set's bonus disc, whereas SAE features the cover art from the slipcase that houses the entire set.

amazon:

SAE:

If I were you, I'd order the "Used-Like New" set at amazon from seller "THEDVDMUSEUM" for $90, rather than pay $150 for a near-mint copy from SAE.

If money is an issue by any chance, you might want to take it slow. I might be in the minority on this, but I happen to think you got the very cream of Irwin Allen music when you bought the La La Land set.

GNP's LIS Volume 2 (not a Williams CD) gradually became an acquired taste for me, but it's not up to the JW standard and is far less essential IMO. And again IMO-- others will disagree-- the scores from LAND OF THE GIANTS and TIME TUNNEL are a distant second to LIS.

VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA has more fan support if I'm not mistaken, but without having seen the show you're taking a chance.

The FWOIA bonus disc is a curio for people who loved the TV shows, which I think you've said wasn't you. It includes a lot of interviews and a big collection of sci-fi sound fx from the four series.

For more LIS, if you're in love with the sample of JW's "My Friend Mr Nobody," you could seek out GNP's LIS Volume 3, which has that whole score plus the "classic 1950s sci-fi" sounding score from LIS "The Derelict." Note that Volume 3 is not included in the FWOIA box set. It came out later, packaged as "LIS Volume 3, FWOIA Volume VII" to match the boxed titles.

Having grown up on most of the shows, the boxset is a nice nostalgia trip -- if you're primarily just a LOST IN SPACE fan, the La-La Land release is more than enough.

However, there's some good stuff on those other discs -- the VOYAGE disc is notable for having Jerry Goldsmith's score; and John Williams' score for the pilot of LAND OF THE GIANTS is great... but again, if you're not a big fan of IA, you might have buyer's remorse later on.

I seem to remember the original slip case was different. The Amazon picture being the original.

I agree--you've got to have Goldsmith's Voyage score and Williams' Land of the Giants score. It is somewhat a mixed bag, and it is true that by getting LIS vol. 3 and the La-La Land disc you have the best music from LIS. I just wish GNP would have done one of the Courage or Leith Stevens Voyage scores instead of the Sawtell/Shefter pilot score. For any of these TV albums I think what fans want are the cues that were tracked and retracked throughout the series--the Voyage pilot score did not represent the style of music the show eventually developed and was rarely heard after its initial use.

I do own the set - one of my most beloved purchases for LOST IN SPACE alone. The Amazon image depicts the thin, foil-stamped-and-laminated outer sleeve that slides over the hard outer box. This same image is repeated (sans foil) for the bonus disc booklet cover. The SAE image is actually the front of the hard outer box under the sleeve.

Yup, that's it.

I bought this set many years ago only because it was Williams. I had zero connection to any of these TV series (although I remember some glimpses from TIME TUNNEL and LAND OF THE GIANTS that were shown as reruns on Sky Channel or Super Channel in the 80's). Of course, I had a hard time digesting this very challenging music only for its purely musical value. I still have to be in the mood for this, but there's plenty of interesting orchestral details if you pay enough attention. But the LOST IN SPACE scores are IMO some of the most avantgardistic stuff Williams has ever done (including his concert works). Lots of melodramatic "sturm und drang" with blaring brass dissonance. I'm not sure you'll like this at first, henry (knowing your taste a bit), but give it a few chances and it might just grow at least a little bit on you.

In hommage to this thread and the set itself, I believe I shall listen to the title theme highlights on the bonus disc.

More than likely. It's been a while since I last saw the boxset. I flogged mine about five years ago.

IIRC, the second one is from the spine of the box, which was pretty wide to accommodate 6 CDs/

No, that image is not the spine of the box, it's the front without the foil sleeve. The spine shows the respective series logos.

it might be cheaper to get the individual scores seperately, I don't know. It's all outo f print and the bonus disc is ahrdly essential.

Sorry to bump this old thread, but i wanted to ask, is this one
http://www.amazon.com/Fantasy-World-I-Allen/dp/B000063BV1/ref=tmm_acd_title_0?_encoding=UTF8&sr=1-1&qid=1424026861

a re-issue of the previous release?
it says it was released in February 2013 and the label is zyx records.

It's awfully cheap comparing to the first GNP Crescendo box of 1996.
http://www.amazon.com/Fantasy-Worlds-Tunnel-Voyage-Bottom/dp/B000001OZV/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1424026861&sr=1-1&keywords=Fantasy+Worlds+Of+Irwin+Allen

Are they identical in content?

Hmm... I don't think there's been any official re-release from any other label. An unauthorized release maybe ?

In the label's site it says zyx-GNP as label:
http://www.zyx.de/Musik/Soundtrack/The-Fantasy-World-of-I.Allen-7036.html

also there are other zyx-GNP titles:
http://www.zyx.de/Labels-36.htm+/l_id/41

Maybe they are affiliated with GNP somehow?

Ahhhh OK. So I guess they're the international distributor perhaps. Looks like the same content, why not go ahead and pull the trigger on it !

Maybe I will, but I would like to see first if anyone has it to hear opinions..
If anything is missing, eg. the liner notes (I would like those)

I have the ZYX set, and excepting the ZYX logos, it's identical to the GNP set. ZYX is a European licensor which has also issued some of Ian Anderson's (Jethro Tull) stuff. I've never noticed any issues with my FWIA set that would cause me concern.

And, of course, the ZYX set is in print and much cheaper.
