What are your opinions on the score? I've heard it being described as a good cross between Dark City action and Thirteen Days suspense/thriller underscore. Southall (Movie-wave) gave it 4.5 stars out of 5 and ScoreNotes gave it 8 out of 10 stars.
I enjoyed this score a lot. The music is definitely in the vein of Thirteen Days, but has some good action bits here and there. The entire album is very dramatic.
It had a nice main theme, iirc that is used throughout. Excellent playing too (LSO I think?)!
I bought this CD for the very reasons you described Kevin, but I've only played it once or twice before shelving it; not that it was bad just not what I was told it was. I should probably take it down for a spin but I remember it being much more subtle.

One of my favourite Trevor Jones scores - if you're already a fan of Mr Jones's action music, this is more of the same (and I mean this in a good way.) The Japanese production company must have really dug deep to have gotten him and the London Symphony to score their movie.
I had the chance to watch the movie at a Japanese film festival, and it's not a bad picture (adapted, as with so many "military hardware" movies, from a novel) and you can see where they're trying to make this a character-driven movie rather than focussing on the hardware. But it certainly felt like other elements which might have helped join up the scenes and characters more coherently have been omitted, although I haven't read the original novel on which the picture was based.
I should mention that "Aegis" is also "The Colour Purple" of the Japanese Academy Awards. It was nominated in every category it was eligible for in the 2006 Japanese Academy Awards (i.e. everything except "Best Foreign Film" and the two actress awards) including Trevor Jones's score - and somehow ended up with no wins whatsoever out of thirteen.

Indeed! But what?! You like a melodic orchestral score these days?! I'm shocked, my friend!
It happens. Even though it's from 2005, this has more 90s elements than 2000s or 2010s elements, so I guess that explains it. As you remember, while we disagree on basically every new score these days, our taste overlaps more when we get back to the 90s.
