Is this not one of his most beautiful scores, or what? Wow!

I completely agree, it's just incredible, so many great themes. It's a good film and Michael Keaton, did a great job. This movie makes me cry everytime I watch it.

This score should be in every Barry fans library!

A sorely underrated movie, and a magnificent score.

Michael Keaton deserved an Oscar nomination, and so did Barry.

I'd no doubt support the Barry suggestion, but Keaton? Great job, but not Oscar-worthy.

Well, I didn't say he should win. cool

Yes, I like the one a lot.

As I mentioned in another thread, it was actually my ex-wife's favourite of my CDs. She'd get that one out and play it all for herself.

The funny thing is, I don't think Barry necessarily slaved in coming up with this one. In fact, it almost sounds like Barry in a routine. And yet it is still lovely to listen to. I think the ability to create that type of score had, by then, become quite effortless to him.

Cheers

Given his other scores, it is difficult to place this one high on my favourite John Barry scores. But just like every other JB score, it's worth hearing, it's worth owning.

I find it is a lovely late evening listen and whilst the main theme pales in comparison to many of his others, I never take the disc off feeling disappointed. I haven't seen the film but I don't need to, to enjoy this work.

Tracks Child's Play and The Roller Coaster are highlights.

It's an example of a Barry score where the composer settled for a main theme only (yes, there are minor themes here and there, but never as central as the main one). It is repeated countless times in the score, sometimes arranged with minor differences and slightly different orchestration. Somewhat of a routine score and a bit lazy, but nice nonetheless. It is also true that the film didn't really need a full-bodied score with more variety.

My Life is a wonderful Barry Score and a great movie too. The score fits the movie perfectly. It definately pulls at the heart. My grandfather who was like a father to me passed not long after My Life came out. I will never forget driving home for his funeral listening to track number 9 "My Last Trip Home". The somber horn in that cue will always well me up inside. I will always and forever associate that cue with remembering my grandfater, he was my hero. Thank you John Barry. You RULE !

Ok, on the strenght of your comments on this score, I've just bought one!

I am a fan of Barry's romantic style music and from what you are all saying this sounds like a very pleasant score.

I can't undestand how I missed it on release.

If you like Barry's romantic stuff, then you are going to love "My Life". The "Love Theme" starts out with a solo piano playing the main theme. Simple beauty, just so John Barry. This score has a little more sentimental value to me because of the memories I associate with it, but as a Barry fan, I am sorry you have missed it this long. I am sure you will enjoy it !

I'm not a real big Barry fan, but I do have a few favorites outside his Bond output and this is one. Perhaps it's because when I watched the movie at home with my wife, I burst out in tears like I had never done before during a movie and just fell sobbing into her arms (I cry or at least tear up easily when watching movies, but nothing like this). The music was a big part of that, along with the Keaton's performance and the sentiments of the film. I put it alongside "Somewhere in Time" as among my favorite romantic scores.

Alex, what did you think of Barry's score to Indecent Proposal? I think that theme is just beautiful and was highly effective in and out of the film.

Alex, what did you think of Barry's score to Indecent Proposal? I think that theme is just beautiful and was highly effective in and out of the film.

It's a beautiful theme and score. Don't get me wrong about Barry repeating his main theme in a given film - in fact, he has repeatedly said that his approach to film as a composer consists of writing a theme that contains part, if not all, of the dramatic components of the story. Best of all, this simple approach has given him an important place in film music history. His music doesn't need the films it's written for because it sounds as good (and at times even better) as a stand-alone listen (this is why he is one of the more popular composers out there). Indedent Proposal sums up what Barry's musical approach was in the 90s (with the notable exception of Dances With Wolves): He composed a main theme and one or two secondary themes. The main theme is the dramatic base of the film - in Indecent Proposal it tells us that the story is filled with romance and anguish, it's the musical expression of the two main characters' situation. The composition is as simple as you'll ever get: in C major, it never modulates and all notes conform to the scale. A completely basic tonal composition and yet one of his most beautiful - the trademark Barry musical style: simple and beautiful.

Alex

P.S: I have a recording of the theme played and arranged by myself on the piano that I uploaded last year on this board. If you'd like to listen to it, just let me know.

Just wanted to say thankyou to all of you for pointing this beautiful score out to me.

My copy arrived this morning and it has been played three times already.

John Barry at his best.
