Pondering upon "The Power of Kroll", my mind notices more similarities with Malcolm Hulke subject matters than those by Robert Holmes.

I've never cared for "The Power of Kroll" and - for the past 40 years since initial viewing in 1981 - thought this story atypical of Robert Holmes.

For whatever reason, I've been thinking about Hulke's departure from WHO after Pertwee's tenure had ended and wondering what a Hulke-scripted serial for Tom Baker might have been like.

It subsequently occurred to me that a number of Hulke's story elements from the early '70s re-surface in "The Power of Kroll".
The notion of 'civilized' colonists interferring with indigenous primitives from "Colony in Space" gets reiterated in TPoK.
The refinery in TPoK mirrors the mining of ores in "Colony in Space".
Giant reptiles seen in "The Silurians" and, of course, "Invasion of the Dinosaurs" are replaced by Kroll - a giant squid.
The swampwater setting in TPoK provides some nautical backdrop to the adventure as had done "The Sea Devils".

It's as though Robert Holmes recycled some 'Mac' Hulke aspects into the Key to Time season, either unconsciously due to the pressing deadlines to provide a script for production ... or perhaps as a sort of tribute to Hulke, who, by 1979, was succumbing to cancer.

Am I imagining things? Could "The Power of Kroll" have been a Pertwee-era story treatment that was given a late-'70s re-vamp & face-lift to fit into the Key to Time?

Don't get the hate for Kroll. Love it personally. Great location, great filming, great guest cast - even if they got Neil McCarthy and Philip Madoc the wrong round in talent Vs placing in said cast.

I even think the FX are way better than it's given credit for. As cheesy as it is the split screen FX between models and live action actually works to give the impression of size for the monster in a completely shameless King Kong nod. Night filming and actors painted green. What's not to love! They can never be berated by the anti racist crowd as there definitely no green actors available! Tom must've thought he'd wandered back onto the set of The Golden Voyage of Sinbad...

And two perfect leads. In all these respects it's a towering classic compared to Timelash which has none of the qualities of the above.

Oh mighty Kroll. Great Kroll Indeed.

A footnote to all this was when I bought from our local Aldi supermarket, a product that was a cross between a Croissant and a (bread) roll. Proudly labelled "the croll", lol....
