Young composer Zacarías M. de la Riva is yet another stunning example of the current Spanish film music movement, which has given us great scores by composers such as Alfons Conde, Roque Baños, Javier Navarrete, Fernando Velázquez...

His score for the Italian/Spanish horror film Imago Mortis is a stylish, both dark and beautiful orchestral/choral score that is best described as belonging to the gothic tradition of horror film music. The score was designed to reinforce the fairy tale and gothic aspects of the story and de la Riva used a big orchestra and a chorus for that purpose, hiring the Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.

Starring Geraldine Chaplin, the film, where terror is carried out using 'thanatography', opened in Italy in January and is expected to premiere in Spain and other territories later this year.

I received this a few days ago, and I absolutely love it.

I had ordered it after listening to the samples and reading James' capsule review ( http://www.movie-wave.net/capsules/?p=3 ).
My one point of disagreement is that my overall impression is not that "the main thrust of the score is the action/thriller music" and that "'subtle' is not a word that could be used to describe this music"; it's not all crash-and-bang-and-awe (even if not in Tyler's style, as James doe spoint out).

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful music!
Highly recommended.

I bought this a while back, based on spook's recommendation (and it was dirt cheap by the time I got around to adding it to an order).
This is my second play through, but it's making a much bigger impact on me than the first one (again, it's all about the mood one's in, I find).
It's really high quality horror scoring, without the modern day reliance on sound design, stingers and drones.
It's fully orchestral, with choir in some tracks, and it's written in that old school, gothic drama style.
I heard a little nod to Herrmann in one early cue.
There's a melancholic string/flute theme that's really lovely too.
I can only imagine how great play through 3 and 4 and 5 are gonna be.
Cheers spook smile

Hey, keV, if you like this, can I suggest two more of his. They are the two ' tad the explorer' animations he did. They're great, full on big orchestra. The second one has some pastiche/ homage/rips( you choose) Raiders of lost ark( map room, anyone). Only here they make me smile rather than frown. And the films are a blast too.

Had to comment here…. Love this score. You know how you find a score you love and you’re desperate to try and get others into it. Again I always think these things are never about the actual music but the perception of the film or the composer. If it’s not a big name or a notable movie it’ll often get passed over. That’s why I love this board as I’ve found a great few things I’d never have tried without others mentioning it …very often from Mr McG smile
I wonder, with nearly 500 views of this thread, how many of those folk know this or would now try it? Although following other scores by this composer ( including the Tad stuff) he’s never quite done it for me the way this one did ( although I thought Automata and the recent Below Zero were pretty damn good) I just love the mix of the usual horror type stuff in this along with those moments where the music just soars with emotion.
Mind you…what do I know..I even liked the much maligned film!! smile
