I read the script for "The Two Jakes" back during the first production of it, and thought it would make for a very worthy sequel to "Chinatown" (despite a very odd twenty-page sequence of flashbacks from the first movie!). The finished film jettisoned most of what I so liked about the script I'd read. Some elements remained, but so much had been changed -- for the worse -- that the movie was an incredibly frustrating lost opportunity for me.

I'd heard along the way -- and I have no idea if this is true -- that Goldsmith was approached to replace Parks' score when the producers were unhappy with it, and he turned them down. I'd like to believe that's true, but I can't vouch for it.

THE TWO JAKES could have been great, but it took a lot of wrong turns and ended up unremarkable and boring. I've seen it once when it came out, sheesh, what a mess. CHINATOWN is one of my favorite movies ever, I've seen it numerous times and will see it again. I didn't expect THE TWO JAKES to be that good, but it's a pity that it turned out to be so uninteresting. Doesn't help that Goldsmith did not score it; at least, we'd have a CHINATOWN companion piece.

My theory is that when Nicholson showed Goldsmith the film, Goldsmith said, "Forget it, Jack. It's not Chinatown."

For what it's worth, I recall a thread on here a few (or perhaps several) years ago when somebody wrote that they had done some original research regarding "The Two Jakes" and were closing in on some new information about the production regarding Jerry Goldsmith. The implication, at least to me, was that Goldsmith had at least composed some demos for it, but that was just the feeling I got from the post - of course I have no idea what they may have dug up. If memory serves me correctly, this was somebody reliable and possibly in the soundtrack business who posted this but I don't remember who it was.

I remember years ago MV said all would be revealed soon.

I'm still waiting for "soon" to arrive.

Yes, MV's post is what I remembered. Thank you for the confirmation. Wow, his post was nearly a decade ago. Clearly the 2015 project that was to address "The Two Jakes" and Jerry Goldsmith's connection with it didn't materialize. I'm curious how this information can be revealed now, or maybe that 2015 project is still going on and it was just stalled. In any case, it sounds like what he knows might be a bombshell.

I seem to recall that Jack Nicholson and Van Dyke Parks were friends and that's how he got the gig, this of course could be wrong, but I seem to recall being told that sometime ago.

I also do seem to further recall hearing a story that at some point Jerry was approached to do the picture after it not testing well and either turned it down or was unavailable when the film need to be finished by.

This of course goes back about 25 years, so I could be mistaken.

but, it also makes some sense.

Van Dyke Parks also scored Goin South for Jack
