A goodly number of people in America are unemployed and didn't get a holiday on Monday.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/09/07/ED5D19IL7J.DTL

An editorial in the local paper pointed that out and reminded me that some of you are still out there looking, getting discouraged at times, and still getting up every day and logging in here.

I just want to say "good luck" to all of you. I hope you get a paid holiday soon.

I second that, thanks David! I just hit my first anniversary of being unemployed a couple of days ago. It's also a couple of days until the first anniversary of Hurricane Ike hitting here and the memory of suffering through months of repairs and dealings with f*#$&%! insurance companies. It has been A VERY, VERY frustrating last year for me to say the least! Love my "kinfolk" here on the boards. You guys made it easier to weather the "storm"!

[edit] Just got back from a job fair (only 6 companies showed) sponsored by dice.com which is a tech job site, mostly IT. Nearly every one of the hundreds & hundreds of job seekers there were IT people and all but one of the companies said they aren't hiring IT people or are not in the IT business. So what was the point?! Most went away mad, dejected or both. More frustration added to the mounting frustration of months and months of job searching.

Yes, it's tough out there, as I see every day dealing with delinquent auto loans. We are rewriting loans by the bushel to keep people in their cars. I'm telling you, unless you have savings and a severance/UE comp package from the state, it is NOT good to be unemployed. I really hope this turns around fast.

Yeah, I'm unemployed too at the moment, and it sucks, especially when you pay $1700/month just in mortgage for a very small one-room apartment and you get $2000/month in unemployment fare (or whatever it's called in English). That leaves $300 to telephone, internet, student loan, FOOD etc., which obviously doesn't add up.

Ditto. I'm on the lookout for a new job as well (quit my last one couple of months ago). Matter of time before I'm at it again but I'm starting to feel the vacuum.

Officially, it will be one year for me at the end of September.

I've had hope for one university position that I did a preliminary interview for back in February. The university has been going through severe budget problems, but this position was still sitting available. I called the guy again yesterday who said that the position will most likely be eliminated due to the budget cuts.

Obviously not in a good mood today.

I'm on a mailing list for a local job support group. But the only emails that I receive for them are from "vultures," companies that are "selling" a sure fire way to get a job in this job market. You pony up a lot of money (yeah, like we have excess cash to spare), and they'll show you how to find a job. Yeah, right.

What happened to your TV gig? Thought that was going well...

No, I'm a freelancer and sometimes it takes several months between projects. I had hoped to land a secure job by now, but alas....

I posted this advice in a previous thread on being unemployed, but it bears repeating...

I spent an entire year unemployed between summer 2001-2002 because the actor's strike in L.A. drove the production company I worked at out of business. Worse yet, the industry shrank because a lot of work went to Canada or overseas during that period, and never came back.

A lot of people I knew ended up changing careers, moving away, selling their homes, and a few went bankrupt. It was awful, and it's happening again this year.

So here's my advice... wake up every morning, and spend an hour or so making phone calls and sending out resumes.

Then, GO OUT. Go to the beach, get coffee, go to the library and read. Eat right and exercise, because it's very easy to let yourself go. Try to use the time to better yourself.

Use the credit cards only when you must. And downsize your bills wherever possible (example: if you have a cell and a land line, disconnect the land line).

If the bills continue to pile up, sell any crap of value. CDs can become CD-Rs. Old books can be traded in. So can DVDs you haven't watched in a year. They're just things that can be repurchased later if you want.

Jobs often come from connections, so keep up with your old friends and co-workers. Don't be afraid to ask if they've got any leads, and don't be afraid to lean on them if you get depressed.

And just remember that you WILL eventually find something. The only way you won't is if you don't look.

Best of luck to you all. I've been there, and I feel for you.

I've done pretty much what Sarge said this past year except I look and apply for jobs on online many hours each weekday. I treat it like a part time job and take of the weekends, usually 3 day ones, to keep me more or less normalized.

At the end of last year I did repairs for the damage done by Hurricane Ike to keep me busy and since I did the work mostly myself, I was able to take the labor monies alloted by the insurance company to pay myself for the work. That really helped out financially. Since that time, thanks to Lukas, I started writing blogs for FSM weekly for many months and that gave me a regular thing to do that I really liked and gave me some satisfaction and a bit more self worth which can be hard to come by when you've been unemployed for a long period of time. I've since taken a month off from that so I don't get burned out or get into a rut, I'll get plenty of that when I get a job!

Curious, what are you guys doing for health insurance?

I didn't take COBRA at first until the government offered to subsidize 65% of the cost through the stimulus bill. I wasn't notified of it until late April. Applied right away, but they turned me down. Then I filed an appeal, and was awarded the insurance in early June. However, if I wanted it, I had to pay for it back to the first of March. So I did.

But now, they're covering next to nothing. It's cost me more to pay for the insurance premiums than I could have just paid for any doctor bills out of pocket.

I'm staying as healthy as possible and keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm also ingesting liberal doses of healthy, nutrient rich, unfiltered beer as a supplement to my diet to fend off unwanted illnesses and relieve stress! smile
