This is an awful, awful, awful score that doesn't even work on a novelty level.

Agree 10 fold, and someone else noted it almost ruins a rather good film....same here.

Decades of "this obsession" it's so hard to turn my score ears off and enjoy the bloody film!

Actually, despite liking Dire Straits, all of Knopfler's scores are awful. Watched Last Exit To Brooklyn recently with the sound down. Turned it up occasionally to see what the score was doing....and it was embarrassing bad.

"Awful awful awful"?

Come on. Ruins the film? It works really well in some scenes, like when Montoya is in the woods with his sword and the slow climb up the Cliffs on Insanity and the rope cut.

It works fine in the film, but the standout thematic material is the mystical 'Guide My Sword' theme for Inigo, and it really deserved a much stronger orchestral performance rather than the thin, reedy synth we got.

The film is perfect, the music is a part of that, but it's not a good listen away from the film.

Knopfler wrote some highly memorable scores for films like CAL and LOCAL HERO. The themes are still classics 40 years later.

I like much of Dire Straits and Knopfler's solo albums, but he was never a good film composer, IMO. Lacked some of the dramatic "film" sensibility that is required. It's mostly just him substituting the pop album studio with a film score studio, but not really getting into the film. It's nice Irish-inspired folk music and all, but rarely works in film(s). I haven't seen THE PRINCESS BRIDE, but I had the SCREENPLAYING compilation with some selections. Not bad, but not that exciting either.

What rubbish from a 15 year younger me!

Knopfler is great. Yes, he doesn't have the most complex compositions, but nor does everything have to be. I love his breezy take on things, and have to come to really appreciate his film work too, in the 15 years hence. I regret selling off my SCREENPLAYING CD these days.

Heard his last score FINDING ALTAMIRA (Hugh Hudson) from 2016?

Thanks FB for a kind response, not just calling me out as a wrong arsehole!

I'll give these two a shot, know they are highly regarded (film & score) and not oft talked about here.
Maybe MK went wrong working with Guy Fletcher and using cheap synths more than his own fine guitar playing? I think I have a suite from Local Hero on some classical album but don't remember the themes moving me *shrug*.

I really feel a better acoustic score would help this film immeasurably, as it is I can’t even sit down to enjoy the film because the score is so disappointing.

Local Hero, on the other hand, is a score I adore and really feel Knopfler got to the heart of the film.

I bumped the thread with a no idea, and not a single person has said anything about it. I think it's a great idea -- anybody else?

I like his scores too, "Local Hero" is my favorite one. "Princess Bride" has good moments too, like every Knopfler-album, no matter whether it's a "Dire Straits"-, solo- or soundtrack- album.

I wish Rob Reiner had met Marc Shaiman before this movie...

I'm sure he could weaved Willy DeVille's "Storybook Love" into the score nicely as well.

Something occurred to me yesterday: we did that vote for Yavar on Goldsmith titles and one of the things on the list was two electronic scores re-done for orchestra by Leigh.

What if there was a fundraiser for someone (not necessarily Leigh, though I'd certainly not be opposed to that) to re-do the score with orchestra?

Could be interesting, sure.

I love the synth sword fight. But could be cool to here with an orchestra.

I adore Guide my Sword. The Friends' Song is pretty damn good. It's no Local Hero, but it's still a fave.

Ruins the film?!? The way the movie is scored is the musical equivalent of the Rodent of Unusual Size. It's perfect.
