There's actually precious few Britcoms available in Region 1. Well, at least the ones that interest me. I also read complaints on Amazon (yes, complaints on the internet!) about content edits, which, if true, is disconcerting, but so common on tv series releases.
Looking at that Sharp Intake of Breath has me wondering if the majority of 1970s Britcoms are played that broadly; I like a bit more subtlety sometimes, and like what Montana Dave wrote before in this thread: "WHAT was it that was so funny that those people were originally laughng about I wonder."
Hacker: "Don't tell me about the press. I know exactly who reads the papers: The Daily Mirror is read by people who think they run the country; The Guardian is read by people who think they ought to run the country; The Times is read by people who actually do run the country; the Daily Mail is read by the wives of the people who run the country; the Financial Times is read by people who own the country; The Morning Star is read by people who think the country ought to be run by another country; and The Daily Telegraph is read by people who think it is.
Sir Humphrey: Prime Minister, what about the people who read The Sun?
Bernard: Sun readers don't care who runs the country, as long as she's got big tits. ----------------
I just discovered there was a 2010-11 OFAH prequel series called Rock and Chips, which is said to have been about Del Boy's early days. OFAH castmember Nicholas Lyndhurst is the lead, playing what, his ancestor?
That's about it unless you count FAWLTY TO WATER as a sitcom
The period I mentioned is full of classic UK sitcoms. Dad's Army, Only Fools And Horses, Allo Allo, Keeping Up Appearances, The Good Life, Blackadder, the list is endless. The best will always be One Foot In The Grave - consistent hilarity throughout the run.
That captive studio audience was laughing much louder than I was, that's for sure. Sorry, litefoot.
Still Game was great during its first six series, but its quality dropped off considerably for the recent revival; it's more a soap opera-character study kind of thing now. I just now started series nine, and while there are some yuks scattered about, I find myself watching more to see what the "end game" of Still Game will be. (No spoilers, please).
