I'm going to guess you haven't seen CE3K?

Mark, come on. I'm talking about the version that's used on the reissue of the Arista set versus the original 1977 album, because it's not the film version.

the expanded close encounters is too dissonant form e. I prefer the shorter album. Too bad the sound quality isnt great. I think the one I have was released by Varese?

Well Shaun you need to be a bit more specific in your reply. Your wording comes across like you are unfamiliar with the cue.

It sounds like the film version to me, perhaps that's the full cue Williams recorded before it was slightly trimmed for the film. The cue on the original album doesn't sound like the film version unless Williams edited it down even more.

Unfortunately Laurent Bouzereau's liner notes don't go into the specifics about assembling the disc.

I would hope that given the fact that I've posted here for twelve-plus years, some things would just be a given. For instance, that I've seen the film Close Encounters Of The Third Kind. smile

Anyway, the version on the expanded version, the one titled "Wild Signals." I hear what you are saying, but the film version---while slightly longer---sounds closer to the original album version than the reissue, which sounds too slow and almost like a rehearsal of the version in the film.

"Wild Signals" on the expanded CE3K is indeed the full cue. A different pre-recording was made and the editing and visual effects were created to match it. Later Williams re-recorded the cue as heard on the expanded CD. A short version of it (but still not as short as the film) was on the original album. The problem with the longer version is that some of the instruments were not given the attenuation necessary to give the music the context of the conversation between the mothership and ARP synthesizer.

Thanks for the info Mike.

Shaun it wasn't meant to slight you, if CE3K can't even get enough love at JWFAN, it wouldn't surprise me there are those who have been collecting film scores for years who aren't familiar with the score or film.

The best presentation of this score was the 1982 album -- a great listening experience and the only version of E.T. I listen to.

Took the words right out of my mouth. Thanks!

By the way don't forget E.T. and Elliott Separate the one that's with the 20th Anniversary edition is an alternate what's on the laserdisc isolated score is the film version.
