Well, that's suprising indeed, I actually like this news! Bring it on Horner!

Is this the first instance in which a R/C composer has been replaced, as opposed to doing the replacing?
I am quite stunned by this news. It seems to be the least type of film Horner would be interested in, but it should be certainly interesting.
Fun times ahead (I'm still not seeing the film though, out of respect for the original).

Not looking forward to this no matter who is scoring it.

Well I'm happy about Horner scoring it but....IT'S NOT KARATE....IT'S KUNG FU! The filmmakers are a lite bit misinformed. Based on the trailer this remake takes place in China where they study Kung Fu not karate which is Japanese.

Sorry but having studied various martial arts for years this bugs me to no end.

Yes! I can't wait to hear the Kobra-Kai come onscreen to Kahn's theme!

Not looking forward to this, even if Jackie Chan is in it.

But a Horner score? Sweep the leg, James!

I have no interest in seeing this remake, but... James Horner? James Horner?? I've said it before, but now I really am starting to seriously believe that this year is that great turnaround in film music many of us have been waiting for.

I know I'm looking forward to hearing what he will come up with, even if I have heard the majority of it all before.

I'll take Horner always over the alternative.

James Horner??? Yes, you can count me in as being incredibly surprised. Especially as I was talking about Örvarsson only yesterday, so on that note, I'm certainly not sad to see him go.

I agree that we might be reaching an equalizing period in film scoring where R-C still exists but does not monopolize the landscape of film music as they did for the past 5-10 years. I think Horner will bring something interesting to the table. Heck, I'd be all for some second hand Tan Dun or Takemitsu. wink

Seriously though, does anyone know why the hell they haven't changed the title to The Kung Fu Kid? This seems like a massive problem to me.

I thought this was a joke before I opened the thread.

I just had a heart attack.

DMD will be very happy at this news. I sure as hell am!

Yeah, likewise. As a student of Ishinryu Karate myself, I am thoroughly disgusted by this.

The only saving grace is that Horner's score might be good.

But I hope he doesn't use a shakuhachi in a Chinese setting!

Hahha, Jackie Chan even says in one of the trailers that "I will teach you Kung-Fu".

When this trailer started, I was like, "Fuuuuuuuuuck you," but as it went on, I found myself actually wanting to see this. I know, I can't believe it either. I get the Karate vs. Kung Fu deal, but that's a well-made trailer (for once).

Based on the director's prior work, this movie will most likely not be any good, so don't get your hopes up.

The only saving grace will probably be Horner's music (regardless how unoriginal it may possibly sound).

This score is going to be awesome. I bet Horner finds a way to do something we've never heard, but also make it familiar. Like AVATAR!

According to Reuters, here's how the deal got done...

The Smith family are travelling home after a family night out to see Avatar at the cinema.
While Jada Pinckett-Smith drives, Will Smith (aka Big Willie) has noticed his son (Little Willie) has been awfully quiet.

BW - "Hey son, you okay, you're awfully quiet tonight. Didn't you like the movie?"
LW - "Yeah dad, the movie was cool, but I've been gettin ripped at school"
BW - "You serious!! What for?"
LW - "Well the other kids at school are all laughing at me, sayin my new movie is gettin music from some crappy composer who uses his remote control to write his music"
BW - "But I thought all the kids were down with the Zimmer beats"
LW - "Well, little Billy Cameron laughed and said his dad gets James Horner to do his music, and that his films are the biggest, most successful films ever made"
BW - So what you're saying son, is that you want James Horner to score your new Kung Fu movie?
LW - Yeah, pretty much... is that okay?
BW - Leave it with me kid, what my boy wants, my boy gets!!!

...or maybe not wink
