Yep, same story as for Star Trek IV (except in that case it was Leonard Nimoy). Thank goodness the extreme popularity of John Williams's score for the original Star Wars negated any chance of Kershner bringing his buddy into THAT beloved sci-fi franchise.

That's exactly the reason why they can't release the theme as orchestra only without choir, even if they wanted to.
Love it. I can certainly understand those who do not, though. The choir definitely can be seen or heard as being cheesy. But for me, it's part of that movie and score. The film and score both definitely grew on me after seeing and hearing it for the first time.
