Anyone who has been waiting impatiently for the original version of The Bionic Woman to come out on DVD has heard rumblings about its release for a while, but Universal has exclusively announced to EW that the series’ first season will be hitting shelves in October. …And everyone who scoffed at the remake cheered!

I’ve watched a few episodes of the original Bionic Woman on Hulu (called Bionic Woman Classic — scoff, again) and have been meaning to watch more, but I only watch marathon shows when they’re on DVD to avoid brainwashing myself with the five or so 30-second commercial spots that seem to play in a loop on streaming sites. So this news thrilled me to no end. I’m glad I held out and waited for all those rumored legal issues to be worked out. Creator Kenneth Johnson even said via his website weeks back that he was recording commentary for an episode. (As well as for an episode of Six Million Dollar Man, which is also headed for stores, he told EW earlier this month.)

That said, how are you going to celebrate the official announcement and your subsequent victory as fans of classic TV, PopWatchers? No parachuting. Okay?

I have the second season of smdm and I'm very glad that all is being released. I sure wish that they treat it well and upgrade the hell out of it. And OH if only we could get the SMDM music on CD.
I will have this series. The one I want the most is SMDM "Death probe" stories. I was floored completely back then in the 70s by its outlandish design and ominous presence.

And then there was that sound:

I share your anticipation.
Now "Batman 1966", "Green Hornet" and the 1979 live action "Spider-man" and I am a very happy DVD viewer. I'll be totally extatic if I can also get the music on CD.

I bought the UK PAL SMDM box set for the original pilot movies, only to find out they were the padded out TV edits. I'll pick up the set only if we get the uncut Cyborg, Wine Women & War, and the Solid Gold Kidnapping.

Very odd that The Bionic Woman is coming out via Universal in season sets, yet the SMDM is being handled by Time Life (in partnership with Universal probably), no doubt in a complete series box. Considering how much the shows crossed over for two seasons, I'd have thought it would have been done under one company and in tandem.

Still, I'm thrilled they're being released in the States at all.

I had read somewhere, but cannot find it now, that the 3 pilot movies are indeed in their original forms. In fact, all the episodes are going to be preserved as they originally aired, with correct crossover episode titles and credits. I assume by this that they will have some SMDM episodes on the BW Dvds and vice versa. Universal has done this with iother shows of thiers which have crossed over (like Magnum PI / Murder She Wrote).

But take note of that announcement that the specs are currently saying the episodes are in "anamorophic widescreen" which if true would ruin the entire presentation (and raise questions into the IQ of those who put them together).

Yes, this means that Universal's Bionic Woman set will include the Six Million Dollar Man crossover episodes "The Bionic Woman, Parts 1 and 2", "The Return of the Bionic Woman, Parts 1 and 2", and "Welcome Home, Jaime, Part 1" (almost always syndicated as a BW episode, but originally aired as a SMDM episode with "Part 2" originally airing as a BW episode).

Does this mean that the SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN set will not include "The Bionic Woman, Parts 1 and 2"? That's like the best episode of SMDM, but I don't want to buy the whole BW series to get it.

Nice to know that it was a typo. But after the crazy experience of releasing 15 "Route 66" episodes in the wrong format, you can never be too sure!

I haven't watched The Bionic Woman since 1991, when a local station was airing it. However, the last time I saw SMDM was about ten years ago, when Sci-Fi had it on. It was during Steve Austin's "Moustache" period and the episode was just awful! Embarrassing in a Buck Rogers in the 25th Century-guest-starring-Gary Coleman sort of way. Maybe it was just the foul mood I was in then. I do love the music for those programs, though...

A week ago today we brought you the package art for Universal Studios' October 19th DVD release of Lindsay Wagner in The Bionic Woman - Season 1. Fans immediately complained about the cover design, noting that two of the smaller pictures (the "helicopter" and "running" images) were from the third season; it felt inappropriate for them to be on the first season box. Fans also noted that the large picture of Jaime Sommers seemed a bit too serious-looking, as well. TVShowsOnDVD passed this fan feedback along to Universal immediately, and the studio pulled the packaging graphics from distribution before the day was over.

A short time ago today Universal sent out the revised package art, and WOW! What a difference a week makes: the main image is the iconic picture of Jaimie from the show's opening credits (switching sides for that in the process, to accommodate the direction she's facing inthat shot), and the smaller images have been replaced as well. We also see that the picture of Oscar Goldman (Richard Anderson) is much more vividly colorful this time, so kudos to the studio for that detail as well.

Besides the improved packaging graphic, Universal has also supplied two screen captures of the menu screens from this 4-disc set. As you can see, the second menu shot demonstrates that Kenneth Johnson's commentary track is present for both Part 1 and Part 2 of the bonus cross-over episodes of "The Bionic Woman", which originally aired as part of The Six Million Dollar Man. It's always great to hear from Kenny, of course! We can't wait for the long-awaited DVD releases for both of the "bionics" shows, and we know you can't either. Stay tuned for more updates on these, as they become available!

Hey Stu, correct me if I'm wrong but didn't you express regret at having purchased one of The Bionic Woman CDs? I know it's a different composer, but...

Following up on last October's release of the first season, Universal Studios Home Entertainment has today announced to press and retailers that The Bionic Woman - Season 2 will be out on May 17th. The 5-DVD set presents every episode, remastered, in full screen video and with English mono sound, plus English subtitles. Cost is $39.98 SRP.

Besides the featured episodes of The Bionic Woman, there will also be 2 cross-over episodes from The Six Million Dollar Man: "The Return of Bigfoot, Part 1" and "Kill Oscar, Part 2" (so that the complete multi-part story of each can be watched in order, with no having to switch discs to the DVDs of another program). You will also get other bonus material, including an exclusive interview with show star Lindsay Wagner. That's all the extras that the studio has officially passed along at this time, but we know from show creator Kenneth Johnson that he's already recorded a commentary track for the 2-part story "Doomsday Is Tomorrow", which aired during this season. We also know that actress Janice Whitby, who played "Fembot Katy" in the 3-part story "Kill Oscar", has recorded interviews about her role in that arc, so we expect that to be included as well.

Stay tuned for updates about this title. In the meantime, there's a hi-res 3D look at the packaging below. Guest stars during this stellar season (besides Lee Majors, obviously) include Stefanie Powers, Ted Cassidy, Sandy Duncan, John Saxon, Severn Darden, Norman Fell, Marcia Lewis, Hoyt Axton, Doc Severinsen, Fionnula Flanagan, John Houseman, Jennifer Darling, Janice Whitby, Jack Colvin, Howard K. Smith, Vincent Price, Julie Newmar, Abe Vigoda, Lew Ayres, James Hong, Katherine Helmond, Ford Rainey, Martha Scott, Robert Loggia, Lance Kerwin, Rene Auberjonois, Gary Lockwood, Elisha Cook Jr., and William Boyett.
