Is it me, or has it been forever since we've got anything big from John Williams? I mean what was the last major rerelease? I guess some might say Black Sunday but remember when we'd get a really BIG one at least once a year? I know theres not much left to be had but theres still Jurassic Park, Lost World, the Prequels, Hook, Harry Potter 1-3, A.I....It seems like in the plethora of awesome scores coming out from LLL, Intrada and everyone else, Williams "big" scores are in dire need of having someone throw us a bone. Anyone agree, or am I way off here?

This is exciting, although MV said he cracks up at the Hook rumours - I wonder why that is?

The truth is that all we can expect is some expanded releases of old scores and some releases of some of his old scores like Family Plot. Williams has almost retired. Thank God he is still working with Spielberg and we can propably enjoy a few more scores from him. I am waiting for Interstellar. I also wish we have some recordings of his various concertos.

One word: Dracula.

I believe that score was done at Anvil-Denham. Unless the masters were shipped back to Universal, all that survived was the edited dubs used for the stereo LP. The album provided less than 40 minutes of music. I believe Williams recorded some cues slightly altered for the album.

It is a fine score. On the other hand, the film is awful. A mess. I mean, Van Helsing dying was asinine. And poor Laurence Olivier used the same silly semi-Yiddish accent found in his characters seen in "The Boys From Brazil" and in "A Little Romance." Frank Langela trying to be a romantic Dracula was a misfire. Give me Bela Lugosi or Christopher Lee any day of the week.

Another terrific score for a filmed version of Bram Stoker's blood sucking creature was the one composed by Wojciech Kilar for Coppola's 1992 take on the classic tale. That film had some striking visuals, but overall was a disappointment. Keanu Reeves was simply dreadful. And that weird hairdo worn by Gary Oldman as a decrepit Dracula was laughable. So much so that Mell Brooks effectively lampooned it with his 1995 comic version that starred Leslie Nielson as title character. "Dracula: Dead and Loving it" is a really funny movie with a great score by Hummie Mann.

Thanks for the info, Ed. I've never been able to get through the Langella version on DVD. I have the old Varese soundtrack CD and like to listen to it, but as myself and others have pointed out, the sound quality grows shockingly poor as the CD progresses, until that final track, when (as someone else noted) it sounds like the engineers put the microphones back in the closets before they were finished recording.

I love Varese's reissue of "The Fury" and hope that one of the other labels will give the score a similar treatment, even if it means pretty much duplicating the Varese release with better audio quality. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets reissued this Halloween, given the recent cracking of Universal's vaults. In the meantime, I'll keep listening to Lukas's terrific reissues of "Star Trek II" and "Star Trek III."

And as for Dracula, I'll take Christopher Lee. I never cared for him much as an actor, but he does make a terrific Dracula.

I caught the Langella Dracula on cable about a year or two ago and enjoyed it a good deal. Don't recall much of Williams' score now at this point, but would be more than willing to rent the movie and give it a closer listen in anticipation of the soundtrack getting a new release.

Oh I know. Thats what I was referring to when I started the topic. I know he's all but retired, but theres quite a bit to go on the rerelease front. I forgot all about Dracula until someone mentioned it! I'm hoping for a 2 or 3 disc A.I. in time for the films 10th anniversary.

A few? Could Hook actually be on the plate? (Seriously, what the hell is with so many people "so sure" Hook is coming in November?)

How about a C.D. of some of his work from Universal Television, like the main titles for "Kraft Suspense Theatre", "Bob Hope Presents The Chrysler Theater", and maybe "Alcoa Premiere"?

I'll take some of the blame for that. When MV mentioned they were working with Sony I had suggested over at JWFAN that perhaps the odds were in favor of Hook possibly getting a release.

As far as the November guess, that's people running with their own ideas. No one knows anything, it's all speculation.

Well, next year is its 20th anniversary. Maybe they've got a big re release planned!! (Ok, I'm kidding)

"The Fury" was recorded at Fox. Unfortunately, the masters suffered from some loss in top end due to the tape going south. But it still sounds better than the reverbed-to-death rescore done at Anvil-Denham. The performance on the soundtrack is also better. The LP version's performance was good, but was played more in concert fashion, lacking the intensity of the original.

I'd have thought that the tapes, along with the original negs, cuts & trims ect. would have been shipped to the States as a matter of course. The film is a bit ropey, & removing most of the colour for the DVD has only made it worse. I'm sure I can remember seeing it in rich colour at the cinema.

I saw saw a studio print struck off the original neg. It was timed way too dark. The color was simply awful. Muted tones that at times took on a sepia look.
