Why is this thread still going?

Every time somebody asked my advice on whether they should start a film music label -- going back to about 2002 -- and they wanted to know the positives and negatives, the #1 negative I always told them was that your music will eventually get uploaded by some crook so that anyone who wants it can take it for free. Some people chose not to get ino the business, possibly due in some small part to my advice. Others listened and got into the business anyway, and they are now dealing with the same problem almost all the labels have been dealing with for many years. But there is absolutely nothing new about it. That doesn't make the most recent abuses any less serious, but in my book, every abuse is equally serious.

Any sign of The Last Man On Earth yet? I was particularly looking forward to that release. Unless I'm mistaken, you scuppered that one for another label better than all the world's downloaders combined could have managed.

Lukas hasn't posted here in a while. I'd like to know what's the state of things at the moment for him (and that girl)...

Hmmm, as other posters here already said the files are all over the internet and she is just one head of the hydra.
She should be put into court but this will surely not end the download problem as such.

More important is, I think, if the downloaders realize that by not purchasing products from FSM, Intrada, etc. they are only increasing the speed in which film music labels die and at a certain point in the future only the studio could release such stuff and I am pretty sure that they have absolutely no interest in doing this - especially not on a physical medium like CD.

Please -- oh, please -- let this thread die. It's become overly self-indulgent, and has become a stale back-and-forth which serves little-to-no purpose. I find it amazing that nearly 1000 replies can fuel this type of argument or conversation, but how many replies did the TNG box set, itself, garnish? I rest my case.

The entire thread? Lukas reacted to bad news, we've been talking about the things that surround it since.

The more this thread goes hyperbolic, the more bickering, the more confusion and masturbatory debate, the less its impact. It has already degenerated from 'righteous indignation' and 'moral crusade' to 'typical internet graffiti' and 'Lukas is my surrogate father whose approval I need' territory. Even Lukas doesn't need that burden.

If you don't want it to be counterproductive, keep it relevant, but I think the damage is done. Many here have so relativised the argument, that the culptits on FFShrine will take it was validation of the general confusion and ambiguity about downloads etc. that they survive on.

The thread needs trimmed to a shorter suite.

Since this thread goes right to the heart of the matter pertaining to the future of FSM I don't see it dying anytime soon.
But when I want a thread to end I certainly don't post on it.

I get the feeling that thanks to this downloading debate and resulting solidarity and indirect promotion etc, more copies of the Jones set will be sold than if the FFShrine business never happened.

I haven't been following this thread for a while, mostly because it makes me sad and there's not a whole lot I can do to help. I'm sure it's been said already, but I have to admit I keep thinking that had this been another label's release, this thread would be locked by now. Mind you, I'm not belittling the subject, but after all, the B word is supposed to be forbidden here. As many sales as this thread may have generated, we've also just educated a whole lot of people in the ways of these bootlegging sites.

I think anyone who works in the industry knows that the moment any album is released (and sometimes sooner) it ends up shared online. It's been this way for years and isn't likely to change. Lukas and his team put a lot of heart and soul and personal fortune into this endeavour, and it's a damn shame, but it's a fact of life. I feel that Lukas's reaction, while quite understandable, was out of character from what I have seen of him on here. He's usually of few words; the calm, collected voice of reason. This really demonstrates how personal this project is to him.

There's a not-very-good system in place for fighting pirates, and maybe it needs an overhaul, but it can only be set in motion by the copyright holders. Unfortunately FFShrine is legally (but not morally) without fault in this situation. The legal answer is to send takedown notices to the sharing sites (i.e. Rapidshare et al.) The drawback is that there's a lot of research and money involved and the legal system is excruciatingly slow, and the offenders usually get off with a slap on the wrist.

That or hire a ninja. (...'Cause ninjas hate pirates, y'know...)

Like I said, not very helpful, but I do sympathize. If I had the funds, I'd buy the set myself. But I sure as heck wouldn't download it illegally.

Michael

I cant get onto the site, but i can see you are angry and annoyed, which is not like you, dont give into idiots and thieves, fsm is a label that is respected all over the globe and you too are held in upmost high esteem within the film music community....

That's true. I for one had never heard of FFShrine. I'd never visited it until this thread directed me there to see what was going on. Now hundreds of other previously-uninformed soundtrack buyers like me, if not thousands, are probably newly enlightened.

Hmm, yeeeah, this is an example of where bumping an old thread is not a good idea.
