It's also worth noting that dissonance isn't one set entity, it appears in various forms like all types of music. For example, I've never been able to get into Morricone's form, particularly evident in his concert works (but also some scores). Same with lots of 'noise music'. On the other hand, I can easily get lost (in a positive sense) in the dissonance of Goldenthal or Penderecki. Or something like Williams' IMAGES. Perhaps because it isn't strictly musique concrete or something, but with very defined, musical writing just doing odd things. Stockhausen has always been a peculiar case for me; some things I love, some things are unlistenable. My attraction to him is primarily in conceptualiztion. For example, I was lucky to attend a rare performance of his park music a couple of years ago here in Oslo, which totally wowed me. But more in an 'art installation' sense than as a musical piece, perhaps. Hence 'concept'.
