I finally got around to ordering the FSM John Williams two-fer of Columbia recordings from 1960-61. If you love big band arrangements, John Williams, and/or excellent sound, I wholeheartedly recommend this disc. I love it.

I agree completely. This is my favorite FSM Williams release. I can't recommend it enough.

It's a good one and is another fine entry in the "Swinging Detective" sub-genre along with Peter Gunn; Staccato; Richard Diamond; and harder-edged stuff like M Squad and Mike Hammer (aka "Kolchak: The Early Years").

Yup, excellent disc. Two great concept albums on one CD! I had both of them before the FSM as well (as LP-to-CD transfers), but it was great to have them in a legit, remastered format.

Yeah, a fantastic disc in very good sound (benefits of being jazzy pop music I guess). Although it does play a little bit of hell with trying to catalog it...

Williams' music for "Checkmate" is an outstanding example of crime jazz.

An excellent release in every respect.

No matter how many times I've looked at the FSM full/composer titles list this just didn't register. Blind spot! Thanks to this thread, I CAN SEE. I'm in need of something with an upbeat flavour. This must be it.

Glad people like it. I don't know if folks saw, but recently Ron Jones has had a big band of his Family Guy session players doing gigs in L.A. nightclubs; Seth MacFarlane from Family Guy comes and does a Sinatra set. I gave a copy of this CD to Seth (not to name drop) and he so enjoyed Williams's arrangement of "Varsity Blues" that he commissioned a takedown so the band could do it at gigs. Seth also has been singing "Big Beautiful Ball" from Not With My Wife You Don't. A hoot!

Checkmate is good.

Rhythm in motion is warmed-over space-age bachelor pad; there are so many better examples.

Still, it sets a good precedent for film score label to release non-film score stuff. If something as ordinary as "Rhythm in Motion" can get a CD release, then a Les Baxter exotica box can't be far behind.

This is probably my favorite of all of Williams' big band/jazz albums/soundtracks. Super cool! :-)

Agreed. I just picked up some nice Mordaunt Short speakers recently and this one of the first discs I played after breaking the speakers in. Great stuff!

I just picked this up myself, slowly going through the JW releases that I've missed over the past few years (Accidental Tourist, Images, Goodbye Mr Chips in the coming months / weeks hopefully).

Only heard Rhythm in Motion so far but it's great stuff. I love the 60's sound, so cheerful & energizing which is missing from a lot of today's music. Looking forward to Checkmate.

Thanks Lukas and FSM for producing this CD!

These 2-LPs-on-1-CD pop-jazz releases are great, the I SPY 2-LP CD being the most recent.

Here's hoping that we can get the OUR MAN FLINT/IN LIKE FLINT LPs on a single CD in the near future.

he so enjoyed Williams's arrangement of "Varsity Blues" that he commissioned a takedown so the band could do it at gigs.

Lukas means "Varsity Drag" but this fact is cool nonetheless.

A lovely CD indeed. About "Rhythm in Motion", I love the arrangements Williams did--I particularly love how he blended the French Horns into the big band sound.

Curiously enough, he perfomed his arrangement of "Buckle Down Winsocki" as heard on this album during one of his Pops concerts in 2002.

I finally bought this after seeing the low quantity alert. I'm a huge Williams fan but have never tried his work from the 60's. I've only listened to the disc a few times, but I love Rhythm in Motion. I own very few jazz CDs and this music makes me want to get more. Checkmate is pretty good too. Thanks FSM!

Big Band style stuff like this just prepared Williams for his version of Sing, Sing, Sing, which is Swing, Swing, Swing from 1941. My copy of the cd arrived a week or so ago. It is being loaded onto the HD on my Bose system when I get home tonight.

Can anyone who has this CD tell me if the band members or at least the soloists on "Checkmate" are credited?

I assume it is the usual jazzy west coast crew, including the Nash brothers and the Candoli brothers.

I have the LP, but the musicians are not credited.

Thanks in advance.
