Channel 4 (one of the 4 major TV channels in the UK) has devoted nearly 15 minutes of it's main evening news show to reporting Barry's death, in two separate features. Lengthy tributes were given by David Arnold and George Martin. BBC Radio 4 also had a feature with Don Black. It's being treated as major news here and that's pleasing to see. When ever I was at the cinema checking out posters of up coming movies, I would ALWAYS look first to see who was doing the music. In the hopes that it would have a Barry, Williams or Goldsmith score attached. The news of his passing hit me the same way as Jerry Goldsmith's in 2004. I was deeply saddened. John Barry, Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams are, to me, the best of the best of what film scores should be. R.I.P. JB. The wave of creativity that coloured my own existence was from works such as his and others who no longer sit down to eat bread with us. That wave of colour is passing now and I honest to God do not know what can ever replace it. That said, I'm sure they'll also announce their plans here. Mine and Dave's meeting on Saturday is just an informal one, taking advantage of the fact we're both in London at the same time.
