I saw the first part of MGM: When The Lion Roars last night, the best doc about a Hollywood studio by a country mile (I found the DVD set when I was looking for something else), I'll watch parts 2 & 3 this week.

I'm just starting season 1 of Lost in Space.

I watched a British show called RIVER. (6 episodes.) Stellan Skarsgard plays a Swedish detective in London. I liked it.

Just finished watching the Grand Sumo November tournament from Fukuoka. Another win for Yokozuna Terunofuji, but he endured some tough bouts on his way to a spotless 15-0 win.

Wakatakakage’s brother, Wakamotoharu, will be joining him in the top flight in January’s tournament after doing well in Juryo, so there’ll be two sets of brothers in Makuuchi, joining Tobizaru and Hidenoumi.

I've watched the first three episodes of MIDNIGHT MASS on Netflix, and so far it's the best thing I've seen in years. For once the characters are all believable, the acting outstanding, and the quality of the writing just amazing. It seems to hit the nail on the head multiple times when it comes to portraying what makes (some) people tick.

My only fear is that it might turn in the direction which a "normal" series might turn. If it does, I'll be severely disappointed, but nothing can erase the memory of those first three episodes. Well, except my my bad memory.

Strangely enough, I let Netflix decide what to watch last night (using that little icon that says 'Play Something' based on your browse/watch history) and it started playing MIDNIGHT MASS.
We watched 2 episodes and found it engrossing.
It could be subtitled 'Now That's What I Call Stephen King' as there were so many call outs to his work and style.
From the tragic/recovering alcoholic protagonist, the sad/lonely ex-girlfriend, over-bearing mum, distant dad, spiteful/vindictive female religious zealot, town drunk, likeable sheriff (sharrif?) etc.
Also, parts of it reminded me of NEEDFUL THINGS, SALEM'S LOT and DOLORES CLAIBORNE.
But it's really well done.
Great atmosphere and remote, isolated feel of the town/island.
Interesting, believable (and well acted) characters.
Slow, but deliberate pace, allowing everything to grow and breathe naturally.
It looks very good...lived in.
And as Graham says, the quality of the writing is top notch.
Even the scoring, using a combination of male voiced hymn recitals and spooky string effects is really good too.
And you never forget being a Catholic, do you!!?

Just finished HELLBOUND, a six-part show from South Korea that's just started on Netflix. It was quite different from what I thought it was going to be like. Which was a good thing. And not as gory as expected and a bit more thought-provoking. I found it a lot more enjoyable than SQUID GAME.

Now moved on to a 2020 South Korean 10-part show, SWEET HOME. Residents are trapped in an apartment block by the transformation of the population into weird mutant monsters. Quite gory this one, a bit confusing but it's good fun.

COWBOY BEBOP, ELVES and season 3 of LOST IN SPACE are being watched too!

Second episode of the sixth and seemingly last season of the The Expanse. frown

Friday's episode was a blast! Sterling writing and a ridiculously awesome action sequence. Top tier sci-fi action adventure that's quite unlike anything else that's come before.

The Langoliers (1995)

A TV mini series from a Stephen King short story. I found my Artisan DVD & viewed it this evening. It's great, it plays out like a three hour Twilight Zone episode. There's an internal flight full of passengers & then one of them wakes up after a nap & most of the passengers (& crew) have disappeared, there's just a handful of people on the plane, luckily one of the surviving passengers is an off duty airline pilot. The plane is working fine, but there's no one on the radio & just darkness on the ground, even when flying over a city. I won't give anything else away, but it really works & has a great cast (including a Stephen King cameo).

Up to episode 4 of this. Just wow.

For anybody who liked the skullduggery, double crossing and out-of-the-blue hits of the Godfather and Sopranos...this is for you.

Do not delay grabbing/downloading that boxset.

The Tourist (2022)

Mini-series travels well trodden genre roads to deliver a patchy, cliché dark comedy crime-thriller which overstay its welcome by the fourth episode and certainly exhausts whatever potential it had by the sixth. But it stars Jamie Dornan and he was worth the ogle.

The Expanse S6E5

Penultimate episode. Damn, I'm gonna miss this show.

I watched two films starring Paul Newman.

1st night I watched "Harper" and in the first scene (similar to Michael Caine's first scene in "Ipcress File") Newman's preparing breakfast. But first he pours ice into a sink and puts his face into it, apparently to sober up quicker.

2nd night I watched "The Sting" and in the first scene Newman is trying to sober up by first getting soaked in the bathtub by Robert Redford, then when he gets out, he further attempts to sober up by pouring ice into a sink and sticking his face into it.

I haven't seen either film for decades, so the coincidence was laugh out loud funny. And after Googling this, it seems that Newman did the ice soak in real life. I coulda guessed that.

Mad Men season five. I seem to have been looking at this series forever, I suppose when you have 4-5 months between seasons it does take time to get through it, also I'm in no rush to finish the series. I didn't realize that the first episode was feature length, great as always.

Watched Dexter: New Blood. It was just okay. Not as good as the original series.

Finished Joe Pickett on Spectrum. It was based on the C.J. Box novels. Just okay. There were some bad actors; however, the mystery kept us watching.

Just started Yellowjackets on Showtime.
