Just picked up THE ROCK today and, knowing it is composed by multiple individuals, wish I knew who composed which cues. I know NGS composed the Jade theme and HGW composed some of the more disjointed tracks later on the disc; aside from that I know very little.

Anybody "in the know" able to help? : P

H-GW: "I basically helped Nick Glennie Smith and Hans get through it - there was a mountain of music to be written and hardly any time (what's new), not to mention probably the most odious director alive plus the eternal task master Jerry "let's torture Harry now" Bruckheimer. The car chase was one of a few that became my responsibility. I thought Nick did a REALLY good job considering the circumstances."

Zimmer: "The main theme is mine, as are a few other bits. It's really hard to tell. I do have a huge influence in there. But I never really wanted to write any of it. It was always supposed to be Nick Glennie-Smith's score."

This isn't the complete score, but most of it. Credit goes to HybridSoldier for this. Apparently Nick Glennie-Smith was hired to score the film, but Michael Bay was unhappy with his theme(s). Zimmer was brought in to write a new main theme (not including "Jade" which is NG-S), while Harry Gregson-Williams and Don Harper provided additional music. NG-S's contributions aren't far removed from his additional music on CRIMSON TIDE, and HG-W's contributions sound like his highly percussive action style at the time (heard in Armageddon, Enemy of the State, The Replacement Killers).

Yup, apparently Nick Glennie-Smith wrote the whole score and then somebody - either Bruckheimer or Bay - decided they didn't like the theme. Since the theme weaved its way through almost the entire score the whole thing needed re-doing.

The legend goes that Zimmer, Gregson-Williams and others were camped out in Glennie-Smith's house, feverishly writing against the clock to get it done.

Under the circumstances it's a wonder it came out so well!

The end credits of The Rock list "The Chase" individually among the music credits (to Don Harper).

Where did this quote come from? He's being amazingly frank about Bay there!

He's hardly alone in his dislike - Bruce Willis, Kate Beckinsale and Megan Fox would all happily never work for him again.

Yep. It remains one of my favorite, perhaps my very favorite, of the 90s RC-style scores.

Yup, apparently Nick Glennie-Smith wrote the whole score and then somebody - either Bruckheimer or Bay - decided they didn't like the theme. Since the theme weaved its way through almost the entire score the whole thing needed re-doing.

Then there's the whole confusion with Glennie-Smith's The Man in the Iron Mask having a nearly identical theme to The Rock. Was it temped with The Rock? Was Glennie-Smith trying to claim ownership of that theme? Has it ever been brought up in an interview?

Weird, I'd always considered this score as Zimmer's - it completely has his sound. Probably my favourite RCP score (after Gladiator, the influence for which is debatable).

And because I first heard the score as mp3s sourced from god knows where, I didn't see the album cover which clearly mentions three composers (and even lately I never really paid attention to it).

Looks like I was misguided all along!

Weird, I'd always considered this score as Zimmer's - it completely has his sound.

Understandable because of the whole Michael Bay/Jerry Bruckheimer connection. The score is almost a follow-up to the sound established in Crimson Tide, scored by (you guessed it) Zimmer and Glennie-Smith.

If you want the true continuation of Zimmer's sound though, listen to The Peacemaker. Apart from one track by Gavin Greenaway, the majority of that score was composed by Zimmer right before the score-by-committee approach really took off.

Why is Michael Bay being referred as odious? I mean do Jerry and Michael "torture" and "torment" the composers?
Where is Steven M. Stern?

According to list, it seems that Harry and Nick were the 2 main composers of the film (not Hans and Nick as it is referred to the main titles).
Actually my personal fave it "The Morgue" in there. Adrenaline pumping and commando badassery!
Does anyone have any interviews by the composers for the The Rock and the process of scoring the film?

If I'm correct certain labels are now releasing scores from movies made by Hollywood Pictures. Which means a complete The Rock score may finally be on the way! We can only hope though. I still listen to this score religiously nearly every week.
