Varese IS a rerecording and one would think that would mean they don't own the OST....especially as it's from 1985. Its a weird deal but they have "soundtrack rights" on this title. That being said, I wouldn't do Pee Wee now that the box set is out. Its basically all there. Its a moot point. Planet of the Apes on the other hand. . . MV

Is the PEE WEE score that's on the Elfman box the actual original soundtrack, or a re-release of the re-recording? If it's the original film tracks, how's the sound and is it complete?

Is the PEE WEE score that's on the Elfman box the actual original soundtrack, or a re-release of the re-recording? If it's the original film tracks, how's the sound and is it complete? According to the liner notes, it's assembled per Elfman's instructions. It's the original score but features the re-recorded versions of five tracks ("Stolen Bike/Lonely Walk," "Hitchhike," "Simone," "Dino Dreams," and "Studio Chase") within the score, with the film versions of those tracks tacked on at the end. In addition, "The Park Ride" includes Pee-Wee's "La la la" dialogue (Elfman says he liked it) and there are a few short pieces not present, including the brief piece that plays as Pee-Wee slides down the pole, the establishing shot of the house, the cop talking to Pee-Wee after he's fainted in the bike shop, Pee-Wee's arrival at the truck stop, the first sighting of Andy, the establishing shot of WB studios, Pee-Wee's walk on the lot, and the beach party/Christmas music that plays during the studio chase. But it sounds great, at least to my amateur ears.

I've checked and listened to the stuff that was left off and I must say, I'm a completest, but they made the right decision on this one. I made a compilation of the COMPLETE score with the extra tracks that weren't on it and it throws the flow of the score off quite a bit. And literally it's like a couple of minutes if that that are left off. Two tracks I would have liked the New Day cue towards the beginning and the WB studio :30 cue.

This is exactly what I was worried might happen thanks to this box. Labels are now put off releasing these scores seperately because "it's already been released" but not all of us could afford to drop half a grand on this monstrosity. I do want the music, but I can't afford it. Thank heavens for La-La Land's releases of the BATMAN scores and the upcoming PLANET OF THE APES, but will I or my fellow paupers be able to ever get an expanded release of PEE-WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE, BEETLEJUICE, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, MARS ATTACKS!, SLEEPY HOLLOW, BIG FISH, CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, CORPSE BRIDE or ALICE IN WONDERLAND? Possibly not as "they've already been released." But released in such a way that only the rich or the mad can afford them. This is a rather worrying trend in general with more mainstream music. See for examples the ludicrous "Immersion Edition's" of select Pink Floyd albums coming later this year at £90.00 a pop, ensuring all but the most well-off Floyd fans will have to get the much cheaper "Experience" versions and miss out on some of the content. But they may go down in price eventually, as has happened recently with the DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN Springsteen box which was originally about £90.00 but can now be bought for around £50.00. The chances of the Elfman/Burton box decreasing in price are as slim as Jack Skellington.

I agree. The boxset version is a perfect release of the score. The few minutes left off are really not worth bothering with. I also think Elfman made a good decision when he included some of the re-recorded tracks. Plus with the original film versions also included it's a win-win. A great release and it's had a lot of play since I got the box. I'm even coming around to the inclusion of the "la la" bits. Perfectly put my friend! I too was VERY happy that they at least included the originals of the five cues they used the rerecording. On my own playlist I only used ALL the original tracks.

Oh How I tried to get some movement on this when I worked at Varèse. I think this would sell great and it fits nicely on one LP. Always though too a picture vinyl with Large Marge the person on the front then the flip side have her animated crazy face.
