For me a holy grail soundtrack is one that I've wanted ever since I saw the film/show, which in some cases could be over 30 years ago. But the historical holy grail is also something that is so hard to find, it becomes almost unattainable, and people go on great quests to seek it. So to me, a soundtrack holy grail can also be one that is so obscure or unpopular or non-standard (like TV shows) that I am certain it will never be "found" and released in my lifetime. THUNDARR THE BARBARIAN by Dean Elliott is one of mine (hence my screen name).

Your Grails are your own so YOU make them smile

I always thought some film music fans were living in a kind of Wonderland:

When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, 'it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.

Obsessive-compusion?

The polar opposite of Obession-compulsive, if I'm not mistaken.

(And, oh, yes! For those who think they have an "ah-HAH!" moment, the "s" after the "b" in "Obession" was deliberately omitted to create the polar opposite effect).

To me, my Grails have changed over time. My one Holy Grail was the Great Escape. But I have had others (of less holiness?) that I have referred to as Grails without the Holy qualifier over the years that have since been "found".

Examples are many but include expanded/complete Dirty Dozen, Devil's Brigade, None But the Brave, Kelly's Heroes, Magnificent Seven, Bridge at Remagen, Bite the Bullet, First Blood, Capricorn One, Twilight's Last Gleaming, Sand Pebbles, Flight of the Phoenix, Too Late the Hero, Bandolero, Planet of the Apes, Wild Bunch, Killer Elite, The Getaway, Strawdogs, Dirty Harry, Never So Few, Swarm, Lawrence of Arabia, Spartacus, and a few others that escape me.

Although there are some that I still covet (more complete versions of Phoenix and The Cowboys for example) I don't think I have any actual Grails any longer. Is this a good thing? I don't know. It's certainly not a bad thing. smile

I have ONE (count 'em 1) holy grail:

The COMPLETE score (including underscore) to the roadshow version of "South Pacific".

If you have more than one "grail," you've already missed the point.

Rubbish. I always had several "grail" titles on my want list (which has now
thankfully diminished), simply because I love many scores equally.
HARRY IN YOUR POCKET was one of my grails, as is the yet unreleased
REINCARNATION OF PETER PROUD. So some folks have multiple "holy grails".
If you prefer, we could change the wording to "treasure". But it's not
up to you or anyone else to decide. It's up to each individual what they
prefer to call scores on their want list.

As mentioned, Alfred Newman and Ken Darby's Oscar nominated lush layout of the Rodgers & Hammerstein song score for "South Pacific" is a gorgeous set of orchestrations (based on the Bennett stage show orchestrations) and an inspired performance that would be a joy on CD if given proper treatment!

The Holy Grail is a mythical sacred object figuring in literature and certain Christian traditions, most often identified with the dish, plate, or cup used by Jesus at the Last Supper and said to possess miraculous powers.

What make a holy grail a holy grail?

Wanting it and not having it. (And it having been like that a long time.)

That's my definition.

Cheers

But whatever you do, don't drink from the wrong one!
