I have all three seasons and the quality is excellent! Tons of supplemental material too. You can also choose between original effects or enhanced.

...and if you happen to have a blu-ray player that doesn't let you turn off the Angle icon, its constant appearance will drive you nuts...

What a crappy non-feature. Sorry Gonzo.

I guess it's really the fault of my region-free blu-ray player which doesn't have the "turn angle icon off" option in its menu as other players do, but really - does it need to be there in the first place seeing as the only angle option for the whole set is "old effects vs. new effects?"

Otherwise great fun!

Question for Henry:
Is the original "The Cage" included in the Blu set and are the FX for that episode redone?

I still haven't picked this up. One day I hope...

Hi buddy! Yes, it's in the third season collection, and the FX are original AND redone. I hope that helps.smile

The new visual effects are a little too "cartoony" for me. Wish they'd take another redue on those FX after 10+ years of better digital advances, but yes, great to own.

Yes, it does--thanks mate.
I was watching it for the umpteenth time (on Netflix instead of the DVD sets--I can't be bothered to dig them out of the basement LOL), and the weird thing is that all the other TOS episodes on Netflix are the redux FX versions, but "The Cage" is not.
Well, I may yet pull the trigger on a Blu player.
But you never know--maybe another format is about to drop out of the sky.

That's my opinion on the TOS redo's as well.
It takes me right out of story when a new shot comes in (with, I admit, a few exceptions here and there).

Not saying all the CGI was great but I originally saw the remastered edition on a standard def television and the new SFX blended in really well. They added a lot of new money shots which I thought were very cool. The contrast was a lot more obvious on an HD screen and yes they're a bit dated at this point.

Yes, that might well be it. On my projector screen and HD the digital FX are a very mixed bag and very different. The old effects of Enterprise flybys look grainy, but at least they actually look like a physical object going through space. The new FX are never mistaken for looking "real".

I saw the CGI on vhs taped from TV, back in the day, and the contrast was jarring and looked phoney even then. It's obviously just a matter of taste - some like it, some don't.
I wish they had mitigated the extra grain that came with the old effects, since it tends to look worse in high-def. However, the corrected effects on the color version of THE CAGE look great.

Some of the redone affects are pretty great. The slingshot around the sun in Tomorrow is Yesterday is amazing, the sequence finally makes sense. Even the "Enterprise in the atmosphere" stuff was really well done.

Other episodes and shots didn't fare as well. The Romulan ships in The Enterprise Incident are poorly rendered, the giant Fesarius in The Corbomite Maneuver is cartoony and The Doomsday Machine shots don't always match up to the original intent.

A re-do would be welcome, but only if they fix all of the sound mix issues for the mono track and actually give the series the same treatment as The Twilight Zone...

What do you me by The Twilight Zone treatment....?

What do you mean by The Twilight Zone treatment....?

The restored music in the opening credits in the first year, sponsor ads, network tags, actual accurate mono sound mix, "next week" episode previews where they belong, accurate production logos, and so on. The Twilight Zone blu rays are absolutely perfect.

Star Trek has never gotten a "night of original broadcast" presentation on home video, where other shows have. Some changes have always been made.
