INTRADA Presents:

THE WRONG BOX
Music Composed and Conducted by JOHN BARRY
INTRADA Special Collection Vol. 191

Intrada presents the premiere CD release of one of John Barry’s rarer catalog items -- the 1966 comedy The Wrong Box. Previously only available on a rare LP from the Mainstream label, this expanded edition fills a significant gap in Barry's discography. Barry's solution for the general feel of the film was to conjure up a sumptuous waltz -- gliding over the film's manic goings-on, subtly adding a sense of reassurance to the giddy proceedings. While various parts of the score more directly address the comic tone, the waltz is the centerpiece. This release features the original soundtrack album in stereo, as well as some lengthy suites in mono of previously unreleased cues, one of which deserves a spotlight: for the early “Montage Of Deaths” sequence, Barry wrote a terrific cue running nearly five minutes. Only the first two minutes appeared on the original album. Now listeners can enjoy the entire piece in its entirety immediately following the "Main Title" on “Suite No.1”.

Although the album masters are long lost, the album program is derived from digital transfers from a mint condition stereo copy of the Mainstream LP. Audio restoration was performed using the Sonic Solutions “NoNoise” system. The previously unreleased suites were mastered from pristine condition ¼” 15 ips full track mono tapes vaulted at Sony Pictures Entertainment and transferred by Chace Audio. Additionally, two tracks were found on the original 1/2" session masters and close out the album, including the complete "Montage of Deaths" sequence mentioned above.

The Wrong Box tells the story of a Dickens-era school class of boys whom are told that their parents have all participated in a lottery known as a “tontine,” involving a great sum of money placed in a trust to be collected by the “winner”—whoever happens to be the last person standing. The entire amount will be presented to the longest-lived survivor of the class, setting the stage for the life-long antics that follow these boys.

This is MY Barry fantasy release!

Everyone will be extolling the other splashier releases this time but this is my jewel.

Thanks, Intrada!

I echo your sentiments! I always thought this would appear from a legitimate source one day, but was completely taken by surprise by its arrival right now!

Amazing! I never bought the Harkit boot. I'm glad to see its existence didn't preclude this release from happening.

I hope this album sells VERY well, so some of the other great Barry scores that Harkit did can find their way out of the vaults legitimately as well...

Cool beans. I'm way over my soundtrack budget for this month, but next year it's mine.

This one is a treasure. This has long been one of the hardest titles to find on LP...especially in Stereo!

All three Intrada titles this time are MAJOR CHRISTMAS PRESENTS!!!

Agh! Guess what I *just* bought, and arrived only last week! I had mixed feelings about doing so, but thought otherwise this title would never see the light of day, and I lost my original LP in a flood.

...Oh well, I am more than happy to pony up for this new, legit, and improved release! Thank you Intrada!

This is a great release, which I ordered immediately. This release seems to have been serendipitous in that “The Wrong Box” was released in the U.S. by Columbia Pictures (Sony) and the Mainstream Records catalog has also fallen into the hands of Sony, making coordination of the release of album and film tracks that much easier. “The Wrong Box” (released in July 1966) was the last of the Columbia/Mainstream/Sony connected projects. I wonder if there are other treasures in the vaults, and whether we can hope for expanded releases of the earlier projects:

Baby The Rain Must Fall [Elmer Bernstein] (01/65)
The Collector [Maurice Jarre] (06/65)
King Rat [John Barry] (10/65)
The Heroes Of Telemark [Malcolm Arnold] (01/66)
That Man In Istanbul [Georges Garvarentz] (02/66)
The Trouble With Angels [Jerry Goldsmith] (02/66)
Walk, Don't Run [Quincy Jones] (06/66)

It would be with mixed feelings that I'd buy this one. The original LP/CD programme is perfect in every way, and I've never had any issues with the sound.

Anyway - great news about The Wrong Box!

This comes totally out of the blue! Can't go wrong with the Barry/Caine couple in the 1960s. smile

A lovely surprise ... smile

This has not been a favourite score of mine (within the wonderful catalogue of works by Mr. Barry), though I do love the main theme. But I attribute my lack of enthusiam for the score to the poor quality sound (a boot purchased innocently back in the 90s superseded a couple of years ago by the so-so sounding Harkit release).

So I look forward to getting this release and having the opportunity to re-assess my liking of it.

A good start to the day!

"The Chase" is more in need of a revamp. One of my favorite Barry scores but the old CD suffers from dire, tinny sound.
