I would love a release of this music!

BTW, all of the different opening theme variations from the different seasons can be found on youtube. I like them all!

I`m always impressed by the wonderful melodic americana scores of that show by David Rose. Just watched an episode that dealed with the treatment of native americans during the 19th century in a very sensitive way and the score was very touching.
Fantastic television music that would make a great 3 - 4 cd set.

I know David Rose's daughter who controls his catalog. She might be interested in working something out with this music if the soundtrack recordings are available. In the mean time Henry Mancini recorded a very nice arrangement of the theme on his "The Theme Scene" album (1978).

If you know his daughter, please reach out to her and let her know that some of us would love to see his Little House music released! It would be a great way for her father's work to have new life breathed into it.

I would be happy to contact her. However, if I could tell her a specific label is interested it would help.

Roy, I just send you a PM on Facebook. smile

This was the show that we would never admit to watching back in the days when we were at school, because you'd just be asking to get your head kicked in. And to be honest, it never really appealed to me. Too girly, not SF enough. But this thread sparked my interest regarding the music. The imdb credits David Rose as sole composer for all 205 (?) episodes between '74 and '83. Even if it was heavily retracked (I have no idea), there must be a heck of a lot of David Rose music in there. Anyone know how much he actually wrote in total?

Coincidentaly, when channel-surfing yesterday, one of the TV stations was showing an episode. One of the girls had been thrown from a horse or something, and it looked like she might be left paraplegic. Some well-known craggy-faced actor played the doctor who was sticking pins in her feet and she was saying that nope, she couldn't feel anything. Then some old vindictive hag shouted at one of the other girls, who was crying, and announced that she wanted the dang horse shot, and somebody (maybe the crying girl) ran outside to weep beside a stack of hay in a barn.

All this was accompanied by some very good dramatic music, almost Herrmannesque in its intensity, and a bit similar in feel to the main theme from MARNIE... or maybe it was Rosenman's REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE? Good stuff anyway.

This was family viewing in my house growing up. I don't think I kept it a secret though I don't remember discussing my viewing habits at school either. Being a nerd was enough to get kicked around in school!

Anyone remember the episode where the Uncle watched over the children and had the dog lick the dinner plates clean? Man, that had me in stitches!

Love the main theme but don't remember anything else about the music.

I'm going to guess the majority of the episodes were sparsely scored, instead focusing on character drama which didn't really need music constantly. Anybody recall?

According to IMDB the characters of Mary and Albert had their own theme music, which often played during their scenes.

I too have always enjoyed David Rose's music for LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE. A CD (or more) of this beautiful music would be an instant buy for me. On YouTube there is some music from the series although not very much. Beautiful opening melody.

I'm in! Where's Cody?

My wallet is ready! One of the earliest exposures to film music for me was Mancini's "The Music Of David Rose" medley on Mancini's "Concert Sound Of" LP. https://www.discogs.com/Henry-Mancini-The-Concert-Sound-Of-Henry-Mancini/master/527559

We'd watch Little House every week when I was a kid and I've seen it twice all the way through with my kids. I can say for sure there is a LOT of really emotional music, melody and recurring themes there. The ones that stick out the most for me were the playful themes (like when Willie and Nellie get poison oak) and the multitude of tragic themes (pretty much every time Albert is on screen or someone is getting bullied). Albert, incidentally, seemed to have his own theme the moment his character was introduced.

Cody here. Of course, I am in. David Rose composed beautiful melodies. A CD of music from his TV productions would be most welcomed; besides it would be a premiere release not a recycled CD from a label looking to spend as little money as possible in its acquisition and production.

David Rose was a frequent user of the leitmotif in his Little House scores. Not only did Mary and Albert have their own themes, but there was a love theme for Laura and Almanzo, a theme for the Olesons, and a theme for Mr. Edwards, which was based on the song "Old Dan Tucker". Lot's of good stuff there!

Have always wondered, have never looked him up, but is this the same David Rose as in "David Rose and his Orchestra" on The Red Skelton Show? Never missed that show as a kid.

Yes it is. His "Holiday For Strings" was the theme.

Ah, thank you, roy. Figured it was. Anyway, just a couple weeks or so ago came across a LHOTP weepie on Me-TV or one of those other stations. Kills me when big tough guys like Victor French are humbled, I'm such a sucker for those moments. Was not a watcher during the original run but have caught a share over the years via syndication. Mr. Landon put so much heart into the series and that heart was reflected in Mr. Rose's work.

Back in 1970 I took a guided tour of NBC Studios in Burbank CA. We sat and watched The Red Skelton show being tapped. David Rose was there with a small orchestra. He looked very dapper and conducted the small orchestra playing HOLIDAY FOR STRINGS. A fun day.

Perhaps PFK meant to post Television City in Hollywood where the Red Skelton Show eminated from on CBS.

Hey guys. No, it was indeed at NBC I saw the Skelton show.

It was the fall of 1970. We first saw the end of The Don Knotts Show, then they walked us over to The Red Skelton Show, both at NBC studios.

On Wikipedia:

Don Knotts: NBC 1970-71

Red Skelton: NBC 1951-53 .... CBS 1953-70 .... back to NBC 1970-71.

I did take a tour of CBS Studios, in 1983 I think it was.

Well PFK, I stand corrected. I didn't realize that Red Skelton finished his TV show career at NBC.
