This has had a good few plays in chez McGann lately. If you like those old 80's scores from the likes of Debney, McNeely and Robert Folk - you know the ones, where the only constraints placed upon the composers was to incorporate that Cocoon-type melody that came from the Randy Newman/Natural End Title template plus the current 'flavour of the month' sounds of Williams and Horner - you should really dig this one. It's nothing new under the sun, but it is quite pleasing to hear a score that really sounds like it was written/composed, as opposed to just programmed into a computer. Certainly not his best work, but a whole lotta fun. Ouch! Poor Folk, McNeely and Debney. In all seriousness though, I had never heard THE NATURAL before reading this but just went and listened to the End Title on Youtube. I am indeed amazed how many composer have pulled inspiration from this piece. The reference in Horner's COCOON is fairly slight, but still present...but moreover...I hear quite a bit of THE ROCKETEER in there and, most egregiously, Debney's title theme from WHITE FANG 2 is lifted quite heavily from it. I had no idea this piece, by a composer I rarely pay any attention to at all to be frank, has been aped so much. Wowzers! That said, I don't think Robert Folk is guilty in this case - I've listened to virtually all of his [orchestral] work by this point, and I don't think I've ever heard a direct lift, nor anything I'd call egregious.
