This needs its own thread. Let the opinions fly.

Will you be buying it? What will the artwork look like?

Doug Fake:
On Monday the 5th, we'll post artwork and audio samples for two new CDs. One is somewhat unusual in that we're reissuing (by demands of licensor, composer and producer) a fast seller from our past that really deserves to stay available for awhile. BUT... being a wildly popular score, you had some feedback for us when we last issued this CD. We listened. This time, we offer an all-new mastering with minor edits restored, crossfades undone, little bits put back in, some re-worked cover art and cool stuff like that. For those of you happy with the last version, continue to enjoy it. As long as our licensor wanted us to make this available again, we figured we might as well aim it at the purists seeking "the final word" on this genuine action classic. Whichever version you prefer, it is - indeed - a classic!

Me smells greed in this. Why not REISSUE it AS IT WAS? but no...lets tinker with it to MAKE it different so we can sucker the people who bought it last time buy it AGAIN. The last one is not even 2 years old. If the studio wants to have it reissued. Then reissue it EXACTLY the same, just indicate it's a second pressing and leave it at that. They know that MANY will be tempted to BUY this one as well. Problem with this "Hobby" (Yes I said it.) IS MANY want the latest, greatest and most current and people will spend money for it. They know this and that's why they do it.

What's next? LaLa land to REISSUE DIE-HARD in the next 7 months with a few extra tracks? Too much is coming out without REISSUES of reissues.

I have to say - you present a fair assessment.

I was told it was complete from Intrada back 2 years ago.

From their description of the first disc: Definitive 1980's classic action soundtrack returns in newly-remastered CD! Presented from recently discovered original two-track digital stereo session master elements, Intrada offers complete score for action music fans everywhere.

Who's forcing you to buy it?

If someone can't control themselves from buying what amounts to a little tweaking, they really ought to seek help. I'm serious.

Also, I wonder what kind of fan of the music they can possibly be.

Okay but if it came out just like it did before, you'd have people complaining that none of the previous issues were addressed.

Nobody's making anybody buy it (as JS said while I was typing). I got it last time around and I won't be getting this. If you want it with the "fixes" then buy it. If the whole idea makes you gag, then enjoy the disc you have. As long as nobody is sucking the money out of your wallet to buy this, I don't think it's worth getting vexed over.

I'm happy it's not gonna be strictly limited and that people who missed out both times before can now rejoice. And it sticks it to Da Speculatas.

WHY not reissue it as it was?...obviously they heard all the whining and complaining that went on over their release, and they LISTENED...and are FIXING it. First everyone complains because of what they felt was wrong with the Intrada release, and now the complaining starts again for them trying to fix it. If someone already has the old release, and wants to buy this new release...what does it matter? Intrada is not making anyone buy it. If you are happy with the old release, just don't buy it.

And believe me, there will be complainers again, about different things. This is a battle that cannot be won, I'm afraid.

People want to buy it and Intrada, et al want to sell it... What is the problem exactly?

Once again, Another who misses the point completely. Glad you can keep MONEY in your pocket Bub but there are those who can't and this is nothing more than selling crack to addicts. I have the Varese and the Intrada. Thats it. What I'm saying is THEY can REISSUE it as it was made as a second pressing for those who missed it without adding more sugar (small as it may be) to entice the hoarders and compulsive buyers.

We each have to master our own problem with collector's psychology, especially the majority of us with limited funds. I've thought I hit bottom several times in my soundtrack collecting, but it's a tough thing to beat.

Bruce, I have NO DOUBT that there will be complainers again...there ALWAYS are. The CD could be absolutely perfect and come attached to a gold brick worth 800 dollars, and people would still complain about something...the gold brick makes it too heavy, the gold clashes with the cover, the cd won't come out of the spindle...

Not having been buying from the specialty soundtrack labels like Intrada or LLL all that long (I've had a few Varese albums for many years, but only because they were often available at brick & mortar stores in the past), I don't own any previous release of Predator, so I'll certainly buy this one and I'm glad to have the chance.

I can see why some people would get annoyed at this, but JSWalsh is right in that nobody's really being forced to buy it. If the licensor and everyone else mentioned by Intrada are really demanding its re-release (and I'm sure they get lots of e-mails from normal people asking about it, too), then it would be silly for them not to do so. If a business partner of yours demanded that you do something which involves reasonably little work on your part but results in your making money, would you say no? I wish the licensor's for some of the stuff Varese owns would demand they release it in a similar fashion, lol.

Interesting. Or am I reading too far into this, Bruce?

(1) Re-issuing it by demands of licensor, composer and producer.
(2) You had some feedback for us when we last issued this CD. We listened.

Sounds like a Win/Win. If you missed out the last time you can finally acquire this score. If you were not happy with the way it was edited or mastered the last time you have the option of getting the newer (improved) version. I don't see the greed in this.

Good for Intrada for putting this back out and fixed. It's win-win. (Edit: OMG people keep typing the same cliches I do while responding - freaky...)

But I really think it's time to hold some interventions around here.

Would it be completely insane for me to suggest that maybe some sort of trade-in deal could work well for those that want to upgrade their pre-existing disc?

Let's say that some percentage of the money, time and effort used to create the new remastering could be quantified, as opposed to the work it took to create the first edition (10%, for example), and then translated into that same proportionate 10% discount off the price to those who send in their old copy.

Just throwing it out there.

Rather than say they are proud to re-release this, and in an attempt to pre-empt the negative response of some who bought the last "limited edition" which is now cast in the light of an inferior release, they go out of their way to state it's by "demands of licensor, composer and producer". In other words, if anyone doesn't like it, take it up with the composer. On that subject, just who is "the producer" mentioned amongst that demanding lot?

I like the idea but they would have to take back probably tons of SEALED ones from the speculators still sitting on them.

Poor Alan Silvestri has probably been getting deluged with e-mails asking him to help the album get a repressing. He's probably like "oh GOD, just re-release it so they leave me the f**k alone!" wink

Can't say I'm too thrilled, I payed $70 for it in Nov (my highest for a single disc). It's certainly a cash grab for them and I don't fault them for that. But they will diminish a bit as a company in my eyes from here on out. So, they'll lose future releases from me that I may have otherwise given a try. Hope this one was worth it Intrada.
